Dirac, Paul (1902-84)
English born theoretical physicist who shared the 1933 Nobel Prize in physics with Erwin Schrödinger for his contributions to the development of quantum theory and its relation to relativity theory . In 1930 Dirac also proposed the existence of the "positron," a positively charged particle with the same mass as the negatively charged electron . It was discovered experimentally in 1932. In the fight between you and the world, back the world.
In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.
God used beautiful mathematics in creating the world.
Of course, if you solve one difficulty, other new difficulties arise. You then try to solve them. You can never solve all difficulties at once.
Physical Laws should have Mathematical Beauty.

Dirac, Paul Adrien Maurice Pronunciation Key Dirac, Paul Adrien Maurice , English physicist. He was educated at the Univ. of Bristol and St. John's College, Cambridge, and became professor of mathematics at Cambridge in 1932. In 1928, Dirac published a version of quantum mechanics that took into account the theory of relativity (see quantum theory ). Paul Dirac (1902-1984) was awarded the 1933 Nobel Prize for physics for his modification of Schrodinger's wave equation, the mathematical theory describing the motion of atomic particles. Dirac, who shared the award with Schrodinger, applied relativity theory to quantum mechanics in predicting the existence of positrons and electron spin.

The personal papers of Paul Dirac
Paul A. M. Dirac A panel of distinguished science historians and archivists gathered science historians and archivists gathered at FSU on the weekend of December 4-6 to discuss the future of the personal papers of Paul A.M. Dirac, a Nobel Laureate and one of the titans of the quantum physics revolution of the 1920s and 1930s. Dirac, who died in 1984, spent the last ten years of his life as a Professor in FSU's Physics Department, and most of his personal papers have been donated to FSU's Dirac Science Library by Mrs. Margit Dirac, the physicist's widow. The panel discussed how best to arrange the collection so it will become a practical research resource for historians of science, and how to keep the papers in the collection from physically deteriorating. The National Science Foundation funded the panel's visit, and has expressed interest in providing support for the arrangement and preservation project. By early 1998, McElrath's proposal to assemble a panel of outside experts had been funded by the National Science Foundation. The panel included:

Genius at work
Each day, I walk past the road where Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac lived as a child. It is pleasant to have even this tenuous association with one of the greatest intellects of the 20th century. Paul Dirac was born at 15 Monk Road in Bishopston, Bristol, on 8 August 1902, and educated at the nearby Bishop Road Primary School. The family later moved to Cotham Road, near the University of Bristol, and in 1914 the young Dirac joined Cotham Grammar School, formerly the Merchant Venturers. Dirac was a student at Bristol University between 1918 and 1923, first in electrical engineering and then in applied mathematics. Much later, he said: "I owe a lot to my engineering training because it [taught] me to tolerate approximations. Previously to that I thought...one should just concentrate on exact equations all the time. Then I got the idea that in the actual world all our equations are only approximate. We must just tend to greater and greater accuracy. In spite of the equations being approximate, they can be beautiful."

His father was a Swiss-born teacher of French, his mother a librarian. Dirac's first degree, obtained at the Merchant Venturer's Technical College, was in electrical engineering, but he had no real interest in the subject and after graduating spent two years studying mathematics at the University of Bristol. In 1923 he left Bristol for Cambridge where he remained for most of his working life.

Dirac's achievements in Cambridge were prodigious. In 1925, while working for his doctorate, he became one of the founders of quantum mechanics when he produced an elegant extension of Heisenberg's work. A little over a year later he presented a very general formulation of quantum mechanics that has remained the basis of the subject ever since. During the next year he essentially founded quantum electrodynamics. In 1928 Dirac took an important step towards bringing quantum physics into conformity with Einstein's

I am sorry that I will not be able to be present at the celebration, my mother passed away early in the morning of 9th July. As all of those present who knew my father will remember that he was a very shy man and he always avoided interviews with the press or anyone else, and I think that this is probably why so many published accounts of his life failed to capture his personal side. For this reason, I am happy to have the opportunity to share with you some of my memories of him. Probably the earliest memory of my father is of him teaching my sister to catch a ball in our back garden. I could not have been more than three years old at the time. Another early memory was of visiting his room in the Arts School and drawing, on what seemed to me at the time, his enormous black-board. My father was a very quiet, gentle man who hardly ever got angry. About the only time I ever remember him angry was just after World War II. My uncle had sent us tulip bulbs from Holland. They looked beautiful blooming in the front garden. We had had some cut flowers in the house and after they died I picked a big bunch of the tulips to replace them and happily trotted inside with the bouquet of flowers. I was genuinely surprised at how angry all the grownups were. My father had many interests apart from physics. He liked to read. Even though he read slowly. He particularly enjoyed science fiction and mystery novels.
