Paul Dirac 's father was Charles Adrien Ladislas Dirac and his mother was Florence Hannah Holten. Charles Dirac was a Swiss citizen born in Monthey, in the Valais Canton of Switzerland, while his mother came from Cornwall in England. Charles had been educated at the University of Geneva, then came to England in around 1888 and taught French in Bristol. There he met Florence, whose father had moved to Bristol as Master Mariner on a Bristol ship, when she was working in the library there. Charles and Florence married in 1899 and they moved into a house in Bishopston, Bristol, which they named Monthey after the town of Charles's birth. By this time Charles was teaching French at the secondary school attached to the Merchant Venturers Technical College in Bristol. Paul was one of three children, his older brother being Reginald Charles Felix Dirac and his younger sister being Beatrice Isabelle Marguerite Walla Dirac. Paul had a very strict family upbringing. His father insisted that only French be spoken at the dinner table and, as a result, Paul was the only one to eat with his father in the dining room. Paul's father was so strict with his sons that both were alienated and Paul was brought up in a somewhat unhappy home.

Paul Dirac
The English physicist Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac, b. Aug. 8, 1902, d. Oct. 22, 1984, made significant contributions to the development of quantum mechanics. In September 1925 he read an account of a lecture on quantum mechanics by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg, and quickly devised a number of new mathematical formulations of quantum mechanics that have since proved to be of great importance. In his first publication, in November 1925, Dirac elaborated a method for deriving the equation of motion from quantum mechanics, and a few months later he clearly defined a number of concepts that were to play a major role in the field. Dirac was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge from 1932 to 1969 and professor of physics at Florida State University, from 1971 until his death. In 1933 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics with Erwin Schrodinger.

Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac
English theoretical physicist known for his work in quantum mechanics and for his theory of the spinning electron. In 1933 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with the Austrian physicist Erwin Schrodinger.
Dirac's mathematical ability showed itself at an early age. At the school he attended in Bristol he was given rather advanced books on mathematics to study independently. His father, a Swiss by birth who was the French master at the same school, encouraged his son to develop his mathematical ability. He wished him also to become fluent in French, to the extent that, according to the son's report, the elder Dirac refused to speak to him unless he was addressed in the French language. This may have fostered Dirac's pronounced tendency to speak seldom and choose his words with utmost care. He avoided company, preferring to work alone. His chief pastime was solitary walks. Toward the practical end of earning a living, Dirac studied engineering at the University of Bristol. The use of approximations that he learned in this study had a strong influence on his later work; it strengthened his confidence in the intuitive approach to problem solving. He came to believe that a theory expressing fundamental laws of nature could be constructed solely on the basis of approximations, guided by intuition rather than exact knowledge of the actualities. He declared that the actual phenomena were too complex ever to be pinned down in a precise way; a physicist must be satisfied to work only with approximate knowledge of reality.

Relativistic Quantum Theory
Paul Dirac, a British mathematician, also developed a quantum theory in 1925, which were also based upon Hamilton's classical mechanics ideas. It was ultimately transformed into a very versatile system of quantum mechanics, but it was not as immediately obvious as was . So it suffered a similar fate to Heisenberg's Matrix Mechanics Lorentz -invariant and obeyed the requirements of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. Relativistic Quantum Mechanics provided explanations for the concept of spin and predicted the existence of positrons Author: Dan Thomas email:

I met Paul A. M. Dirac in 1962 and 1978. In November of 1984, shortly after his death, I attended the memorial service held at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Eugene Wigner was his brother-in-law, and he told me many interesting stories about Dirac, especially about Mrs. Margit Dirac who was Wigner's younger sister. Based on these contacts, I can write a story about Paul A. M. Dirac. Dirac is an important person to every physicist, perhaps in his/her own way. I would like to use this webpage to explain how my research life was affected by him. What is then so special about me? First of all, I maintain this webpage. Many people say that I do this webpage because I cannot do physics. Let us see. In 1962, I was a first-year assistant professor at the University of Maryland, and John S. Toll was the chairman of the physics department. Toll invited Dirac to Maryland for three days, and I had to provide services to him. With him, I had one full hour to ask questions about physics. At that time, the only physics I knew, besides the basic knowledge to pass the PhD qualifying exam, was S-matrix theory or dispersion relations. In 1962, every particle theorist was doing the N/D (N over D) method (if you know this word, you are an old person these days). However, I was quite skeptical about the future of this program because it did not address fundamental issues.
