Descriptive Summary
Creator: Louis Marshall (1856-1929) Title: Louis Marshall Papers Dates: n.d., 1905-1933 Abstract: Louis Marshall, a leader in American Judaism, was born in Syracuse, New York. He moved to New York City and graduated from Columbia Law School in 1877; in 1894, he joined the law firm of Guggenheimer and Untermyer, later becoming a partner in the firm. Marshall was a Reform Jew; president and stragetist of the American Jewish Committee; Chairman of the Commission of Immigration in New York state; and led the opposition concerning the establishment of literacy tests for new immigrants. Marshall was a defender of Leo Frank, a negotiator in the Peace Conference of 1919, and attempted to block Henry Ford's publication, the Dearborn Independent , due to anti-Semitic rhetoric. Though Marshall was a somewhat controversial figure in American Judaism, he nonetheless worked diligently on issues regarding Jewish immigration and rights. The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, pamphlets, minutes, reports, and copies of Congressional bills.

Medicago truncatula as the Nodal Species for Comparative and Functional legume genomics
NSF Project 9872664, 1999-2000 Progress Report (NSF Plant Genome Program)
Abstract
Research activities conducted under this program encompasses the following approaches: (1) comparative genomics, which involves comparing the organization of genes between Medicago truncatula, the crop legumes pea, alfalfa, and soybean, and the well-characterized model plant Arabidopsis thaliana; (2) functional genomics, which involves constructing and characterizing a library of expressed gene sequences, and conducting large scale gene expression analysis to study gene function, and (3) bioinformatics, which involves experts in computing to develop databases and database resources for analysis and dissemination of Medicago truncatula genome information.
The long term impact of this research will be to integrate genetic and functional information across legumes, and thereby expand opportunities for basic and applied agronomic research in economically important legume species. This knowledge will enable more efficient cloning and characterization of valuable genes and traits, such as those involved in disease resistance and crop productivity, and it will ultimately facilitate the development of improved crop varieties. Thus, many of the genes identified in the course of this research will become the focus of crop improvement strategies and of continued scientific investigation by plant biologists throughout the world. The work described in this progress report benefits enormously from previous NSF-sponsored research on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Likewise, completion of the project will benefit not only research on legumes, but the broader scientific and lay communities as well.

Ambitne plany rozbudowy muzeum i przekszta³cenia go w Centralne Muzeum ¯ydowskie w Polsce udaremni³a II wojna ¶wiatowa.
W lipcu 1905 r. Bersohn zwróci³ siê do Zarz±du Gminy ¯ydowskiej w Warszawie, której by³ czynnym dzia³aczem, z propozycj± przekazania jej, w celu stworzenia muzeum

INS Monthly Review , August 1943 (Vol. 1, no. 2. p. 13-19) Proposed Repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Acts Times Herald Tribune , and PM have endorsed the movement editorially and so have the Christian Science Monitor , Cleveland Plain Dealer , Detroit Free Press . Baltimore Sun , Washington Post , Chicago Tribune , and many others. Some Pacific Coast papers like the San Francisco Chronicle and the Seattle Times have come to its support. Other editors resist the proposal. Arguments for Repeal He reminded the Committee that Japan is utilizing the American exclusion laws with much effect in her propaganda campaign in China and other areas of the Far East and pointed out that "by the repeal of these laws this means of stirring up hatred of the Western Nations will be eliminated." Arguments Against Repeal "It might be that passage of this legislation would be considered a friendly gesture by the people of China. But that in itself is not a conclusively convincing argument in its favor, when one views the matter realistically; because while it might give the Chinese great satisfaction at the moment it should also be remembered that the Chinese might consider it an expedient gesture on our part and resent the idea that, coming at this time, it has any significance in our basic relationships. . . . Some By-Products of the Hearings Before the House Committee At the conclusion of the public hearings, the House Committee on Immigration and Naturalization met in executive session on June 7th to weigh the arguments for and against repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Acts and other anti-Chinese immigration and naturalization legislation and to plan for further action. At the end of this session the Committee voted 9 to 8 against repeal, and tabled the bills on the subject which were pending before it. Advocates of repeal have, however, not given up the struggle. It is reported that further public hearings will be heldprobably this falland three new bills dealing with Chinese immigration have been introduced. One is by Congressman Magnuson of Washington (H. R.. 3070)

Notorious anti-Semite Representative John Rankin wearing
a shawl of petitions protesting the motion picture industry. As the war came to a close, the HUAC was basically no longer needed because it had been instigated as a committee to ferret out Nazis. But a Mississippi congressman by the name of John Rankin moved that the HUAC become a standing committee against communism and by a narrow victory, he won. Rankin was not only a well-known anti-Semite, he also had a history of linking Jews with Communism as far back as the 1920s, and he was never remiss in openly using words like "kike" and "Christ killers". His agenda was clearly one of anti-Semitism but he was able to conceal it (to at least those who had no common sense or intelligence) as anti-Communism. He proposed this speech to the committee which was re-read often, not just to the committee but in churches all across the nation: "I am talking about the communism of Leon Trotsky that is based upon hatred of Christianity. Remember that communism and Christianity can never live in the same atmosphere. Communism is older than Christianity. It is the curse of the ages. It hounded and persecuted the Savior during his earthly ministry, inspired his crucifixion, derided him in dying agony, and then gambled for his garments at the foot of the cross; and has spent more than 1,900 years trying to destroy Christianity and everything based on Christian principles." He was never even corrected by anyone that the founder of communism, Karl Marx, was born in 1818. It was virtually unnecessary since it was obvious who these "persecutors of Christ" really were in the eyes of the committee.

The Great Brown Scare: The Amerika Deutscher Bund in the Thirties and the Hounding of Fritz Julius Kuhn
Peter H. Peel In the feverish eight years of world history immediately preceding the entry of the United states into World War II, there streaked across the American political firmament a rather noisy meteor officially called Das Amerikadeutscher Bund, more generally referred to as the German-American Bund or simply as the Bund. In its brief lifetime, the Bund was the object of much hostility, suspicion and fear. It had an almost univerally "bad press" and wild exaggerations concerning its aims. its size and its resources were uttered with patent self-interest and arriäres pensÇes by a number of politicians, journalists and assorted public figures. Yet post-war historians usually dismiss the Bund in a sentence or two when writing general histories of the American thirties. For example: The Bund appeared to be more powerful than it was. It attracted so few members and aroused so much antagonism that the Third Reich severed its ties with this stupid and noisy organization which it recognized to be a liability. The tone is still hostile and derogatory but one should recall this when reading the wild accusations by influential politicians and others (vide infra) that its funds and its programs were provided directly from Berlin. The same writer just cited offers an apparently contradictory assessment of the Bund's strength, however, when he tells us that in February, 1939, "22,000 members and sympathizers of the German-American Bund packed Madison Square Garden." 2
