Rene Descartes French mathematician and philosopher. He is known as the founder of analytic geometry, and he contributed to the formation of modern physics; in French speaking world where his influence was strong, there were strong oppositions to the Newtonian idea of gravity (as an action-at-a-distance), since Descartes insisted on action-by-contact. But he is by far the more important as a philosopher. His method of analysis and synthesis, epistemology on the basis of clear and distinct ideas, mind-body dualism etc., were historically influencial and are still lively issues in contemporary philosophy. ... Rene Descartes SELECTIONS FROM THE PRINCIPLES OF PHILOSOPHY OF RENE DESCARTES TRANSLATED BY JOHN VEITCH, LL. D., LATE PROFESSOR OF LOGIC AND RHETORIC IN THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW CONTENTS
From the Publisher's Preface.
The present volume contains a reprint of the preface and the first part of the Principles of Philosophy, together with selections from the second, third and fourth parts of that work, corresponding to the extracts in the French edition of Gamier, are also given, as well as an appendix containing part of Descartes' reply to the Second Objections (viz., his formal demonstrations of the existence of Deity). The translation is based on the original Latin edition of the Principles, published in 1644. The work had been translated into French during Descartes' lifetime, and personally revised and corrected by him, the French text is evidently deserving of the same consideration as the Latin originals, and consequently, the additions and variations of the French version have also been giventhe additions being put in square brackets in the text and the variations in the footnotes.

She is known primarily for her treatise The Second Sex (1949), a scholarly and passionate plea for the abolition of what she called the myth of the "eternal feminine." It became a classic of feminist literature during the 1960s. Jean-Paul Sartre , beginning a free, lifelong association with him. She taught at a number of schools (1931-43) before turning to writing for her livelihood. In 1945 she began editing Le Temps Modernes with Sartre. Her novels expounded the major Existential themes, demonstrating her conception of the writer's commitment to the times. She Came To Stay (1943) treats the difficult problem of the relationship of a conscience to "the other". Of her other works of fiction, perhaps the best known is The Mandarins (1954), a chronicle of the attempts of post-World War II intellectuals to leave their "mandarin" (educated elite) status and engage in political activism. She also wrote four books of philosophy, including The Ethics of Ambiguity Several volumes of her work are devoted to autobiography which constitute a telling portrait of French intellectual life from the 1930s to the 1970s. In addition to treating feminist issues, de Beauvoir was concerned with the issue of aging, which she addressed in

"Cogito, ergo sum." I think, therefore I am.
To know what people really think, pay regard to what they do, rather than what they say.
Whenever anyone has offended me, I try to raise my soul so high that the offense cannot reach it.
Divide each difficulty into as many parts as is feasible and necessary to resolve it.
Everybody thinks himself so well supplied with common sense that even those most difficult to please. . . never desire more of it than they already have.
Except our own thoughts, there is nothing absolutely in our power.
It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well.
The first precept was never to accept a thing as true until I knew it as such without a single doubt.

DESCARTES, Rene (1596-1650) French philosopher, scientist, and mathematician. At a time when the intellectual movements of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance had become moribund, he conceived fresh programs for philosophy and science and elaborated and defended them with great originality and brilliance. Descartes founded modern philosophical rationalism and had a profound and pervasive influence on subsequent philosophers of all schools. He was among the first to construe philosophy as providing a necessary foundation for science and, rejecting the traditional contemplative ideal, to regard science as a means of acquiring mastery over nature for the benefit of mankind. In addition to being an innovator in philosophy, he was one of the creators of mathematical physics, the inventor of analytic geometry, and an important figure in the histories of optics, physiology, and other branches of science. Philosophy term papers don't have to become what Rene Descartes referred to as an "evil demon..." ENTER YOUR TOPIC BELOW:
In his book Meditations on First Philosophy Rene Descartes presents the concept of an "evil demon," as powerful as God but deceptive, as an explanation for why his senses sometimes gave him unreliable information about the nature of reality. Many of today's philosophy students allude to a similar "evil demon" when describing their latest course, professor, or term paper! But such doesn't have to be the case! Even Descartes realized the "evil demon's" significant role in what we know now as the scientific method for examining knowledge. Similarly, contemporary philosophy students can come to realize that their term paper assignments are very often stepping stones to a far greater understanding of philosophy. Descartes-Essays.Com

March 31 February 11 ), also known as Cartesius , was a philosopher and mathematician ; perhaps most notable for the Cartesian coordinate system , which was influential upon the development of calculus
He is considered as one of the most important and influential thinkers in human history and is sometimes called the founder of modern philosophy and the Father of Modern Mathematics. He also inspired his contemporaries and following generations of philosophers, leading them to form what we know today as Continental Rationalism , a philosophical position in the 17th and 18th centuries Europe.
He was born in La Haye[?] Indre-et-Loire France and at the age of eight he entered the Jesuit College at La Fleche and after graduation studied law at the University of Poitiers , graduating in 1616. He never practiced law, however; in 1618 he entered the service of Prince Maurice of Nassau, leader of the United Provinces of the Netherlands , with the intention of following a military career. He lived in Holland for 20 years where he wrote his first books starting from a short treatise on
