Antoine Deparcieux Born: 28 Oct 1703 in Clotet-de-Cessous, France Died: 2 Sept 1768 in Paris, France Previous (Chronologically) Next Biographies Index Previous (Alphabetically) Next Main index Antoine Deparcieux 's father was Jean-Antoine Deparcieux while his mother was Jeanne Donzel. It was a poor family, Antoine's father being a farm worker. He attended the schools of Porte and Saint-Florent where he learned to read and write. Sadly, before his twelfth birthday, Antoine became an orphan and his education and upbringing became the responsibility of his elder brother Pierre Deparcieux. In Paris Deparcieux found that the financial support provided by Montcarville was not sufficient to allow him to study without a job. He became a maker of sundials and, although this is not the reason that he appears in this archive, it was an occupation which at that time gave him a reasonable income. He was also interested in hydrodynamics and hydraulics and he moved on from making sundials to invent other machinery, in particular pumps. He is chiefly known, however, for his work on mathematical and statistical tables. In 1741 Deparcieux published which consisted of tables of sins, tans, secs (calculated to seven decimal places), and log sins and log tans (calculated to eight decimal places). This work also contains interesting trigonometric formulas for tan a/2.

Antoine Deparcieux (1703-1768) Antoine Deparcieux Né le le 28 octobre 1703 au mas du Clotet à Cessous (commune de Portes; Gard) Pendant 10 ans il fréquente l'école de Saint Florent tout en participant aux travaux de la ferme. En 1725, le désir de s'instruire l'amène à Lyon où il étudie pendant 5 ans au collège des Jésuites. En 1730 il se rend à Paris pour accroître ses savoirs en mathématiques et en physique. Pour subsister il se fait constructeur de cadrans solaires. Il invente : la machine pour élever les eaux du château de Crécy la pompe du château d'Arnouville la presse pour la fabrication du tabac Il écrit et publie de nombreux ouvrages: Traité de trigonométrie rectiligne et sphérique , (approuvé par l'Académie des sciences Nouveau traité de trigonométrie , (avec table des sinus et logarithmes) Traité complet de Gnomonique Essai sur les probabilités de la durée de la vie humaine , (l'un des plus célèbres) Mémoire sur la courbure des ondes 1746 : Antoine DEPARCIEUX devient membre de l'Académie royale des sciences vers 1765 : il est nommé Censeur Royal des livres.
