Jean's father remained in Fourmies trying to save the remnants of his destroyed factory. Delsarte worked in analysis extending work on series expansions due to Whittaker and Watson . He was greatly influenced by their text A Course of Modern Analysis and by Watson's Treatise on the Theory of Bessel Functions. , writing in [1], says:- These works had convinced him that a good understanding of the formal properties of [series expansions of functions] was necessary to a fruitful study of their domains of definition and their mode of convergence. This was the course he followed with remarkable success, opening up new fields of research that are still far from having been thoroughly explored. One of the most surprising of Delsarte's results was a generalisation of a result due to Gauss Gauss had shown that if a continuous function in R has at each point x a value equal to its mean value on every sphere of centre x, then f is harmonic. Delsarte showed that f is harmonic under the weaker condition that f(x) is the mean value on two spheres centre x, radius a and b provided a/b does not take one of a finite set of values. This result is explained in

The Problem
DJ DJ JA ] This is exactly what a few young Parisian math students set out to do.
The Beginnings
WA class BA WA ] After months of persistent questioning, in the winter of 1934, Weil finally got the idea to gather friends (and former classmates) to settle their problem by rewriting the treatise for their course. It is at this moment that Bourbaki was conceived. The suggestion of writing this treatise spread and very soon a loose circle BL ]. According to Chevalley the project was extremely naive. The idea was to simply write another textbook to replace Goursat's.[ GD DJ ] Gradually the young men realized that their meetings were not sufficient, and they decided they would dedicate a few weeks in the summer to their new project. The collaborators on this project were not aware of it's enormity, but were soon to find out. In July of 1935 the young men gathered for their first congress (as they would later call them) in Besse-en-Chandesse. The men believed that they would be able to draft the essentials of mathematics in about three years. They did not set out wanting to write something new, but to perfect everything already known. Little did they know that their first chapter would not be completed until 4 years later. It was at one of their first meetings that the young men chose their name : Nicolas Bourbaki. The organization and it's membership would go on to become one of the greatest enigmas of 20th century mathematics.

Association Bourbaki

Mathematics: Student Awards
The Honors in Calculus Award recipients are recognized for their outstanding performance in the first year of calculus. The Gary Sorensen Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics recipients have shown diligence and exceptional performance in mathematics. The Gary Sorensen Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics was established by John, Lisa, and the Sorensen family to honor the memory of John's father. John graduated summa cum laude from Wisconsin Lutheran College in 2000 with a major in mathematics. The Nicolas Bourbaki Scholarship recipients receive a $1000 tuition stipend. This scholarship is the highest honor conferred by the Department of Mathematics. Nicolas Bourbaki is a fictitious mathematician. He even has a fictitious webpage , which provided a unified development of mathematics with an emphasis on abstraction and rigor. A Bourbaki Seminar in their honor is sponsored each year at the in Paris.

Elvira Monika Laskowski-Caujolle Destruction is not a traditio nal, linear novel, but, as described in its subtitle, "a narrative with interpolations and bifurcations," thus it can be conceived as what George P. Landow calls a "quasi-hypertextual narrative" (189). As in electronic hypertexts, the reader of Destruction The concept of Destruction Roubaud’s fellow Oulipian Paul Fournel is aware of new technological possibilities to create text: "Potential literature is, by definition, rich with all kinds of potentialities. Among those that await us (seek us?), obviously, is computerization!" (Oulipo, Atlas 299). For several reasons I am not convinced that "computerization" is what Roubaud intended. The first reason is solely technical: at the time when the first branch , (Roubaud uses the notion "branch" instead of volume) of The Great Fire of London Destruction , was written, Roubaud was still using paper, pens of different colors, and various typewriters for his literary activities. It is only in the second branch, La Boucle , that he began writing on a computer and started to play with typography.
