  • The comments by J.Conway on the origin of the name Delone (Delaunay). Boris Delone graduated from Kiev University in 1913. At Kiev he was a student of Grave and he followed Grave's work in algebra and number theory. After graduating Delone taught in Kiev where he was a member of the Mathematical Society which had among its members Ch. T. Bialobzeski, P. V. Voronets, N. B. Delone, D. A. Grave, A A Friedmann , A P Kotelnikov, V P Linnik ( Yu. V. Linnik 's father) and O. Yu. Schmidt. Following the Revolution of 1917 there was a change in policy towards education which, certainly in the Ukraine, had to become more technology based and more practical. Algebra certainly did not fit into this new educational philosophy and Grave's algebra seminar was forced to close. Some mathematicians, such as Grave himself, changed to study applied mathematical topics. Delone, however, chose to continue to study algebra and so was forced, in the 1920s, to leave the Ukraine. Delone moved to Petrograd in 1922. Petrograd was the name that St Petersburg had been given in 1914 and, two years after Delone began working there, in 1924, it was again renamed, this time to Leningrad. Delone worked at Leningrad University from 1922 until 1935.

He was a pivotal member of the Society. While Boris Nikolaevich Delone was alive, the Revolution of 1917 was going on. Demonstrations of the Bolshevik Force were ceased in St. Petersburg in 1912 by the forced disbandment of the Central Committee, but began again in 1916.
Boris Nikolaevich Delone contributed to the Algebra, Geometry of Numbers, and Numbers Theory Of course we all know what algebra and geometry is, but Boris Nikolaevich Delone was one of the mathematicians who developed algebra and geometry into what it is today. He took the basic concepts of math and formed it into what we know today. He also did important work on the structural analysis of crystals. Aside from being a fames mathematician

    GIS FUNCTIONS - INTERPOLATION
    by
    Ferenc Sárközy
    Technical University Budapest
    Department of Surveying
    Abstract
The main strength of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) is the common analysis of compound spatial and attributive data. These later are collected by samples. The values of the collected type of data can be expanded to the sites where no samples are available using interpolation methods. The interpolation can be performed either in the phase of data production or when the data are used for spatial analysis. In the second case the interpolation is a GIS function.
A brief review of interpolation methods is given with emphasis to the applicability of the particular method to one of the cases mentioned above.
The possibilities of two new methods the wavelet transformation and the artificial neural network (ANN) approach are also discussed.
Especial enhancement is given to the possibilities of artificial neural networks in model building and interpolation. Connection between the data model and ANN approach is examined. In context of ANN the links between interpolation, classification and GIS functions are explained.
As conclusions several statements about GIS functions and modeling are given Keywords: GIS, GIS functionality, GIS tools, spatial data models, data production, interpolation, classification, artificial neural networks, wavelet transformation.
