    Medieval China
The main topics David covered were a general history of the Chinese dynasties, the beginnings of counting, the area of the circle and Liu Hui's measurement of a sea island. China has gone through many dynasties from -2000 to 1368, each of which is separated by a time of anarchy. The first dynasty was the Shang, during which math was mostly counting. The way they counted was on counting rods, which could be arranged horizontally or vertically. Also there were Oracle bone numerals that were very similar to the counting rods. After the Shang dynasty came the Chou (-481) dynasty. This was a time of barbarians who used the scholars to help them control the people. The Chin dynasty (-221) followed next and was known for burning books. The Han dynasty (-210) was when the formula for the area of the circle was proven using bows to form a parallelogram. The dynasties that followed were Wei (221-581), Tang (591-907), and Song (960-1368). The main mathematician that was covered was Liu Hui. He lived during the Wei dynasty and wrote a book called "Sea Island Mathematical Manual". David showed us his first problem from this book, which measured the distance to and the height of a sea island. He said that they were not sure how Liu came up with his formula. The two examples David covered were speculations on how Liu might have derived his formula. The first used similar triangles and then set up a ratio that would give you the height. The second way used congruent triangles and subtraction of area to come up with another ratio. In both cases the important point was forming the ratio that could use the given numbers to get the height.

    Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier
French mathematician, was born at Auxerre on the 21st of March 1768. He was the son of a tailor, and was left an orphan in his eighth year; but, through the kindness of a friend, admission was gained for him into the military school of his native town, which was then under the direction of the Benedictines of Saint-Maur. He soon distinguished himself as a student and made rapid progress, especially in mathematics.
Fourier was one of the savants who accompanied Bonaparte to Egypt in 1798; and during this expedition he was called to discharge important political duties in addition to his scientific ones. He was for a time virtually governor of half Egypt, and for three years was secretary of the Institut du Caire; he also delivered the funeral orations for Kléber and Desaix. He returned to France in 1801, and in the following year he was nominated prefect of Ishre, and was created baron and chevalier of the Legion of Honour. He took an important part in the preparation of the famous Description de lEgypt and wrote the historical introduction. He held his prefecture for fourteen years; and it was during this period that he carried on his elaborate and fruitful investigations on the conduction of heat. On the return of

Most of what is known of her life is from incomplete records and is therefore imbued with a great deal of legend and hearsay. She was born to a tribe of Shoshone near what is now Three Forks, Montana, and betrothed at an early age to a much older man. However, in 1800, she was kidnapped by a group of Hidatsa, and taken to their village near the present Washburn, North Dakota. She therefore grew up culturally affiliated with this tribe; her name is taken from the Hidatsa phrase for " Bird Woman
