Some say that Dr John Dee's genius led him to become deranged and deluded, others believe he was in league with angels and devils. He caused uproar in 16th-century Europe with his 'angelic conversations' - and he inspired the character of Prospero in William Shakespeare's The Tempest and the main character in Christopher Marlowe's Dr Faustus. But was Dee really 'a conjurer of wicked and damned spirits' or simply the dupe of a clever con man? Early promise When he was still a child, it became clear that John Dee was an exceptional student. At 15, he got a place at St John's College, Cambridge University, and quickly built a reputation as a mathematician, philosopher and astrologer . His skills were so renowned that by his early twenties he began drawing up astrological charts for Mary Tudor, the fiercely Catholic Queen who'd come to the throne in 1553. But Dee lived in a time when superstition and fear of the supernatural was rife and when he made the mistake of presenting Mary with an unfavourable horoscope, she charged him with witchcraft and imprisoned him at Hampton Court. Luckily Mary relented and released him, but this incident began a habit of arrest and release on the Queen's whim. Unsurprisingly, Dee became secretive about his blossoming interest in the occult.

Dr. John Dee - The Original 007
In the 16th century the English were at war with the Spanish. Queen Elizabeth I needed information about her enemies for the empire she was starting to build. And she needed a spy to get it. Dr John Dee, a philosopher, alchemist and mathematician was introduced to her, and became her most trusted and brilliant advisor. He was the man who inspired Shakespeare to create the character of Prospero from The Tempest, and the inspiration for Ian Flemings James Bond... Queen Elizabeth I was an ambitious monarch who wished to see her country grow in influence. Spain, however, was the most powerful country in the world. The Spanish already had colonies in America and ruled the seas. And the country that ruled the seas ruled the world. For England to prosper, Elizabeth first of all had to get rid of the Spanish. But she needed information about her enemies. She wanted to know what their plans were and what strategies they would use. A network of espionage emerged. English informers in Europe and in the New World would be her spies. Dr John Dee was to lead this new secret service.

Elizabethan England magus John Dee (1527-1608) is best known in occult circles for the 'Enochian Keys', a series of nineteen magical incantations received by Dee and collaborator Edward Kelley during a period of Angel/Spirit scrying (1583-1589), which has dwarfed Dee's other Work. Some researchers have suggested that the 'Wisdom of Enoch' and the 'Adamic' language concealed counter-espionage codes, and subtle para-politics designed to symbolically transmutate the collective unconsciousness (his trademark signature '007' influenced Ian Fleming's James Bond). Dee played a pivotal role in influencing Elizabethan England, from the time of his studies at Louvain University (1548). His knowledge of 'Mathesis' (mathematical magic), 'Theurgy' (supernatural powers), and interest in geography, mathematics, navigation, and cryptography brought him to the attention of Queen Elizabeth (he served her as Royal Astrologer), who eventually appointed him in 1592 as Warden of Christ's College (until 1605).

BORN: 1527 DIED: 1608
Born in London in 1527, this remarkable mathematician and astrologer is supposed to have been descended from a noble old Welsh House. He affirmed that among his direct ancestors was Roderick the Great, Prince of Wales. Dee's father appears to have been a gentleman server at the court of Henry VIII. Consequently, he was able to give his son a good education. At the age of 15 John Dee proceeded to Cambridge, and after two years there he took his degree as Bachelor of Arts; while a little later on his becoming intensely interested in astronomy and the like, he decided to leave England and go and study abroad. In 1547 he went to the Low Countries, where he met with numerous scholars, and where he eventually brought home the first astronomer's staff of brass and two globes constructed by Gerad Mercetor.
In 1550 Dee spent several months in Paris, lecturing there on the principles of geometry. He was offered a permanent post at the Sorbonne; but he decline and returned home to England in 1551, where having been recommended to Edward VI, he was granted the rectory of Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire.
The astrologer was now in a delightful and enviable position, having a comfortable home and assured income and being able to devote himself exclusively to the studies he loved. The most romantic circumstances in Dee's life, however, are those which deal with his experiments in

RENAISSANCE MAN:
THE RECONSTRUCTED LIBRARIES OF EUROPEAN SCHOLARS, 1450-1700
Series One: The Books and Manuscripts of John Dee, 1527-1608
20 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm plus guide Renaissance Man: The Reconstructed Libraries of European Scholars, 1450-1700 seeks to bring together on microfilm the surviving volumes and manuscripts of some of the finest libraries in Renaissance England. Series One focuses on the great library of John Dee (1527-1608), philosopher, mathematician, astrologer and theologian. Under the guidance and general editorship of Dr Julian Roberts and Dr Elisabeth Leedham-Green this project aims to reconstruct Dee's Library based on the findings published in John Dee's Library Catalogue , edited by Julian Roberts and Andrew G Watson, (The London Bibliographical Society, 1990). Parts 1 and 2 focus on manuscript materials from the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and Corpus Christ College, Oxford. Parts 3-6 concentrate mainly on Dee's printed books. Part 3 is based on the holdings of Cambridge University Library and Parts 4-6 bring together the largest surviving group of Dee's printed books from the holdings of the Dorchester Library at the Royal College of Physicians, London. "This great library was always at the disposal of Dee's fellow scientists among his friends and pupils. If one believes that the first essential and the true center of any university is its library, Dee's circle might truly be termed the scientific university of England during the period from about 1560 to 1583."
