He later rejected his first names Julius Wilhelm. He lived with his unmarried sister Julia until her death in , he himself also never married. In , he entered Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick and in with the solid knowledge in mathematics he entered the University of Göttingen In Göttingen Gauss taught mathematics mostly at an elementary level. In the departments of mathematics and physics, Dedekind learnt about number theory . Among Dedekind's main professors was Moritz Abraham Stern[?] who at that time wrote many works on number theory. He made his short doctoral thesis supervised by Gauss Über die Theorie der Eulerschen Integrale On the Theory of Eulerian integrals[?] ). His thesis was dexterous and autonomous but it didn't show any of the special talent which was visible on almost every page of Dedekind's later works. Nevertheless, Gauss must certainly have seen Dedekind's gift for mathematics. Dedekind received his doctorate in and he was the last student of Gauss.

I am especially interested in his two articles: Was sind. . .? and Stetigkeit ..., but is there a biography? What is the best treatment of postulates for the "natural numbers"? What is the best treatment of his definition of irrational numbersI know the Bertrand Russell. Best wishes, Sam Kutler The Math Forum

    Early Life
Richard Dedekind was born into the life of research and experimental theory. His father was a professor at the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick. His mother was the daughter of a professor, also working at the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick. He was the youngest of four children and never married. Although he never married he still had the company of the opposite sex. He lived with one of his sisters, who also never married, for most of his adult life. He attended school throughout his child hood at Brunswick. At the age of seven Richard's interest was not in the field of Mathematics. Soon he attended the school of Martino-Catherineum which was a good school for the study of physics and chemistry. However Richard's soon took a disliking to the fields of physics because of the imprecise logical structure and soon he returned to the field of Mathematics. Schooling and mid-life In 1850 Dedekind attended his first courses given by Gauss on the subject of least squares: ...fifty years later Dedekind remembered the lectures as the most beautiful he had ever heard, writing that he had followed Gauss with constantly increasing interest and that he could not forget the experience.

    Irrationality of sqrt(2)
    proof attributed to Richard Dedekind
This proof of the irrationality of sqrt(2) - - uses induction. The inductive proposition to prove is: for all positive integers n, nsqrt(2) is not an integer. As a result of this proposition, sqrt(2) cannot be a rational number, for if sqrt(2) = p/q with p, q positive then qsqrt(2) is an integer. The essential step in the induction is the following fact if n is a positive integer such that nsqrt(2) is an integer, then m = nsqrt(2)-n is a positive integer smaller than n, and msqrt(2) is also an integer.
