Garrett Augustus Morgan
Gas Mask and Traffic Signal Inventor Garrett Augustus Morgan, was an African American businessman and inventor whose curiosity and innovation led to the development of many useful and helpful products. A practical man of humble beginnings, Morgan devoted his life to creating things that made the lives of other people safer and more convenient. Among his inventions was an early traffic signal, that greatly improved safety on America's streets and roadways. Indeed, Morgan's technology was the basis for modern traffic signal systems and was an early example of what we know today as Intelligent Transportation Systems. The Inventor's Early Life The son of former slaves, Garrett A. Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky on March 4, 1877. His early childhood was spent attending school and working on the family farm with his brothers and sisters. While still a teenager, he left Kentucky and moved north to Cincinnati, Ohio in search of opportunity. Although Morgan's formal education never took him beyond elementary school, he hired a tutor while living in Cincinnati and continued his studies in English grammar.

The Traffic Light Garrett Augustus Morgan was born on March 4, 1877 in Paris, Kentucky. His formal education never went beyond elementary school, however, after moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, he hired a tutor. In 1895, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he went to work as a sewing machine repair man for a manufacturing company. Garrett had a knack for fixing things. This word traveled fast, which led to him receiving numerous job offers from various manufacturing companies in Cleveland. In 1907, he opened his own sewing and repair shop. In 1909, he expanded to include a tailor shop. In 1920, he entered the newspaper industry, establishing the "Cleveland Call". Garrett became very prosperous and a well-respected business man. After witnessing an accident between an automobile and an animal-powered wagon, he decided to experiment with traffic light signals.

Garrett Augustus Morgan Cleveland Businessman and Inventor Garrett Augustus Morgan is frequently credited as the inventor of the three-part traffic signal, and his "gas mask" (actually more of a safety hood than a functional mask), but these were only two of his numerous inventions and inventions were only a part of his remarkable life. Morgan's initial success was as an early manufacturer and marketer of hair straightening cream (Morgan Hair Refiner), hair dye, and accessories. With the money earned by the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Company, Morgan financed a number of other inventions and financial ventures, among them the Morgan Safety Hood and the Morgan Automatic Traffic Signal. But Morgan didn't stop there in fact, he continued inventing throughout his life one of his last devices, developed in the 1950's, was a self-extinguishing cigarette! Morgan's first employment in Cleveland was as a sewing-machine repairman, and within a short time he acquired and managed his own shop. It was during this time, or so legend has it, that Morgan wiped his hands, which were covered with a lubricant used for the machines, on a bit of wooly cloth. When he returned to the shop the next day, the cloth was smooth. Interested in replicating this result, he experimented on a neighbor's Airedale dog, whose hair became so smooth that its owner "drove the cur from his house," not recognizing his own pet. Satisfied with his experiment, Morgan tried the same preparation on his own hair, and thus was born G.A. Morgan's Hair Refiner. From this preparation Morgan evolved a wide line of hair products, such that a few years later he could rightly claim to offer "the only complete line of hair preparations in the world."

Who is Garrett A. Morgan 1877-1963?
Millions of lives are saved by the use of African American inventor Garrett Morgan's safety devices: the gas mask and traffic signal.
Garrett Augustus Morgan was born in 1877 in Paris, Kentucky. He dropped out of school at the age of 14 and moved to Cleveland Ohio where he began working at a sewing-machine shop. He became interested in the improvement of machines and designed a belt fastener for the sewing machine, which he sold for $150. In 1909, Morgan opened a clothing manufacturing company and continued to invent new devices. Morgan was interested in workers safety. He invented a safety hood, called an inhalator, which he patented in 1912 (patent #1,113,675). This device was an early version of the gas mask. He won the grand prize for the invention in 1914 at the second International Exposition of Safety and Sanitation. bodyOffer(16772) Morgan did not let prejudice against him stop his efforts to invent devices to make the world a safer place. In 1920, the use of the automobiles increased, causing traffic congestion in many of the large U.S. cities. In 1923, Morgan designed and patented a traffic signal (patent #1,475,024). The signal consisted of a tall post with movable arms that monitored and controlled traffic. The post rotated and the arms moved up. The signal contained lights that flashed the words stop and go. The posts used batteries and electricity from overhead wires. A set of bells signaled that the post was changing direction. Morgan sold the rights to his traffic signal patent to the General Electric Company. Many modern day traffic signals still incorporate the features of Morgans early invention.

Garrett Morgan was an inventor and businessman from Cleveland, who invented a device called the Morgan safety hood and smoke protector in 1914. On July 25, 1916, Garrett Morgan made national news for using his gas mask to rescue 32 men trapped during an explosion in an underground tunnel 250 feet beneath Lake Erie. Morgan and a team of volunteers donned the new "gas masks" and went to the rescue. After the rescue, Morgan's company received requests from fire departments around the country who wished to purchase the new masks. The Morgan gas mask was later refined for use by U.S. Army during World War I. In 1914, Garrett Morgan was awarded a patent for a Safety Hood and Smoke Protector. Two years later, a refined model of his early gas mask won a gold medal at the International Exposition of Sanitation and Safety, and another gold medal from the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Augustus DeMorgan Augustus DeMorgan was one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his time. He was the one that came up with the idea of using a slash to represent fractions, as in 1/5 and 3/7. In addition, he perfected the principle of Mathematical Induction and gave it its name in 1838. Today, the principle of Mathematical Induction is one of the most widely used methods of proof for proving statements and arguments. However, DeMorgan would be best remembered for his many contributions to the development of abstract symbolic logic; he and George Boole are regarded as the founders of this relatively new branch of Mathematics. His DeMorgan’s laws, which were named after him, stated: "The negation of an "and" statement is logically equivalent to the "or" statement in which each component is negated.
"The negation of an "or" statement is logically equivalent to the "and" statement in which each component is negated." DeMorgan’s laws were an important element in the field of symbolic logic. It made things easier for other mathematicians to study symbolic logic and made them more receptive towards this abstract and radical study. DeMorgan’s laws also played an important role in the study of sets theory that sprang up after his death.

Sua conferência inaugural teve por título "On the study of mathematics". Em 1831 deixou a cadeira, mas em 1836 foi novamente chamado, permanecendo até 1866.
