45. An Eye For Method: Augustus De Morgan And Mathematical Education
An eye for method augustus de morgan and mathematical education I. GrattanGuinness.43, St. Leonard’s Road, Bengeo, Herts. SG14 3JW.

Paradigm , Number 9 (December, 1992) An eye for method:
Augustus De Morgan and mathematical education
I. Grattan-Guinness We know that mathematicians care no more for logic than logicians for mathematics. The two eyes of exact science are mathematics and logic, the mathematical sect puts out the logical eye, the logical sect puts out the mathematical eye; each believing that it sees better with one eye than with two. This quotation, from De Morgan in 1868, shows him at his best, The point made is surprising but profoundly true, both in his time and still in ours; he is one of the few to have worked in both disciplines, so that the statement is self-referential; and it is so again in a personal way, for he himself had sight in only one eye, so that his wit shines especially strongly here. In this paper a brief survey of his career and achievement is followed by somewhat more detailed remarks on his contribution, via both mathematics and logic, to mathematical education. He passed his entire career there, broken only by a resignation for five years from 1831 as a protest against administrative practices. He resigned again in 1866 (five years before his death), to be succeeded by his former student T. A. Hirst (1830-1892). His other principal students were W. S. Jevons (1835-1882), best remembered now for his work in economics but then also very well known as a logician; and W. K. Clifford (1845-1879), who obtained the companion chair in applied mathematics at University College in 1874. Little is known, however, about his career and general effectiveness as a teacher.

Lafcadio Hearn (1850)
It was on this date, June 27, 1850, that Lafcadio Hearn was born on the Greek island of Lefkas, from which his Greek mother and Anglo-Irish father gave him his name. While attending St. Cuthbert's in England, at 15 he lost his left eye in a playing field accident. It was also while there that Hearn shook off his Catholicism and adopted a Pantheism little removed from Atheism. Forced to withdraw from school following his father's death, he pursued a journalism career in the United States, establishing his reputation in New Orleans for his colorful, imaginative prose. Between 1889 and 1890, during the Meiji period, he settled in Japan, where he spent the rest of his life, married a Japanese woman and adopted the name Koizumi Yakumo. He taught English and literature, but his perceptive explanation to Western readers of pre-Westernized Japanese life and culture won him Athanaeum 's kudos as "the most brilliant of writers on Japanese life." He was particularly adept at interpreting Japanese Buddhism Want to comment on this essay? Send me an

Augustus de Morgan British logician and mathematician. Boole and he invented symbolic logic, i.e. logic expressed in terms of algebraic operations. In addition, he was a powerful advocate of the Laplacian method of inverse probability in the Britain; thus his work on probability theory and his analysis of scientific inference by means of probability theory are also important. His name is associated with various miscellaneous problems. One of them is the famous "Four Color Problem": four colors are sufficient for distinguishing each area from any adjacent area by a different color from each other, on any map (this is a sloppy formulation, but a precise one can be given!). One day in October 1852, a student asked de Morgan whether this problem can be solved, and de Morgan in turn asked William Rowan Hamilton, a boss mathematician of the day in the Britain. Thus a long struggle with this problem began, and it was solved by K. Appel and W. Haken in 1976, by employing large computers at the University of Illinois.

Biography
Childhood
Augustus De Morgan was born in the month of June at Madura in the presidency of Madras , India; and the year of his birth may be found by solving a conundrum proposed by himself, "I was x years of age in the year x ." The problem is indeterminate, but it is made strictly determinate by the century of its utterance and the limit to a man's life. His father was Col. De Morgan, who held various appointments in the service of the East India Company . His mother was descended from James Dodson, who computed a table of anti-logarithms, that is, the numbers corresponding to exact logarithms . It was the time of the Sepoy rebellion in India, and Col. De Morgan removed his family to England when Augustus was seven months old. As his father and grandfather had both been born in India, De Morgan used to say that he was neither English, nor Scottish, nor Irish, but a Briton "unattached," using the technical term applied to an undergraduate of Oxford or Cambridge who is not a member of any one of the Colleges. When De Morgan was ten years old, his father died. Mrs. De Morgan resided at various places in the southwest of England, and her son received his elementary education at various schools of no great account. His mathematical talents were unnoticed till he had reached the age of fourteen. A friend of the family accidentally discovered him making an elaborate drawing of a figure in

Sir W. R. Hamilton
By Augustus De Morgan
An obituary published in the Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Review , vol. I. (new series) (1866), pp. 128-134. Sept. 2, 1865. At Dublin, aged 60, Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Astronomer-Royal for Ireland. An old article in a review , written on the subject of this memoir, reminds its readers that each of the three kingdoms has its Sir William Hamilton. The Englishman was noted for his patronage of art; the Scotchman was among the first in philosophy; and the Irishman was among the first in mathematics. In this race it is clear that England, if placed at all, comes in a bad third. Her representative is sufficiently described in the view quoted, as ``holding a distinguished place among the virtuosos of his time.'' But Scotland and Ireland have added each a great man to the rolls of fame, and each honours the memory of one of those who make lasting marks upon the subjects which they studied. Those subjects are so different that no comparison can be made. William Rowan Hamilton belonged to a branch of the Scotch family, which settled in the North of Ireland in the time of James I. He was born August 4, 1805

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson
