Abstract
The de la Vallee-Poussin kernel is defined for a class of orthogonal polynomial sequences. We give sufficient conditions for the de la Vallee-Poussin kernel to be an approximate identity with respect to the Banach spaces C(S) and L^p(S,pi), 1 <= p < infinity, where S denotes the support of the orthogonality measure pi. For this purpose we derive a result on the convergence of transferred sequences. Some important examples like Jacobi polynomials and generalized Chebyshev polynomials are discussed. Keywords: de la Vallee-Poussin kernel, orthogonal polynomials

Abstract
In this paper we construct a de la Vallee Poussin approximation process for orthogonal polynomial expansions. Our construction is based on convolution structures which are established by the orthogonal polynomial system. We show that our approach leads to a natural generalization of the de la Vallee Poussin approximation process known from the trigonometric case. Keywords: Orthogonal polynomials, summation methods, de la Vallee Poussin kernel

HISTORY NOTE
The following interesting History Note was given to the editors by Professor James Thompson.
The 7th International Congress of Mathematicians was held at the University of Toronto on Aug. 11-16, 1924. This was the first time the meeting was held outside of Europe. The famous Belgian analyst Charles Jean de la Vallee Poussin was president of the International Mathematical Union at that time. This was his first visit to this continent, and he was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Toronto.
He remained in the USA after the meeting to lecture at many of the large universities, under the auspices of the Educational Foundation for Belgian Relief. He spoke at Chicago, Berkeley, UCLA, Caltech, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Cornell, Columbia, MIT, Brown, Yale, and Princeton.
By studying the October 1924 issues of the Minnesota Daily, the following announcement was found.

Ancient Tibetan Manuscripts of the Tubo Period Recoverd form Dunhuang: Its Historical-Material Value in the Tibetan Studies:Perface Ancient Tibetan documents of the Tubo period are amongst those discovered in the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang in 1900. As handwritten documents in the ancient Tibetan language of the Tubo period, they are important part of the international Dunhuang study and indispensable to Tibetology. Incomplete statistics show that there are as many as 5,000 scrolls of Dunhuang Tibetan documents catalogued and kept in various countries. In quantity they are second only to the Chinese documents found at Dunhuang, but more in number than Uygur, Yutian ( Khotan), Sogdian, and Xixia documents. In particular, the Dunhuang Tubo Tibetan documents have dual values as historical materials; they provide precious first-hand materials for Tibetological study and the study of Dunhuang, and they are amongst the most precious ancient documents in the field of human social science.
Paul Pelliot (1878-1945), a French scholar, plundered many important Tibetan manuscripts of the Tubo period in 1908 and kept them in the National Library of France in Paris. For these manuscripts Jacques Bacot (1890-1969), Marcelle Lalou (1890-1969), and other Tibetologists produced a catalogue entitled Catalogue of the Dunhuang Tibetan Manuscripts in the French National Library, which was published in three volumes in 1939,1950, and 1961 respectively The Ist, 2nd,and 3rd volumes covered respectively P.T. 1-849, P.T.850-1282, and P.T. 1283-2216. Moreover, there are P.T. 2217-2224 (Amitayus Sutra, and Prajnaparamita Sutrain Ten Thousand Verses) and P.T. 3500-4450 (many repetitions of Tibetan manuscripts of Buddhist scriptures). 1

Buddhism in the Western World
By Venerable Dr.Walpola Rahula
The history of Buddhism in the Western world goes back to a period before the Christian era. First there were those contacts and inter-cultural influences which gave Buddhism a hearing in the world into which Christianity was born and developed. Secondly, there were outstanding scholars in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries who presented Buddhism to the Western world through editions and translations of Buddhist scriptures and their research. Finally, certain misrepresentations of Buddhism which persist in the minds of Westerners need to be removed and a brief positive account of what Buddhism has to offer to our modern world presented.
The Buddha lived in India in the sixth century B.C. The first historical and important confrontation between the classical East and the classical West took place in the fourth century B.C. when Alexander the Great invaded India. He was no ordinary soldier. As a pupil of Aristotle, he deeply appreciated cultural values, and in his expedition was a large number of scholars and artists for cultural exchanges. It is reasonable to suppose that the knowledge of Indian culture these Greek intellectuals and artists took back to their country included some acquaintance with Buddhism. As a result of this meeting of East and West, diplomatic relations were established and maintained between several Greek rulers and India's Court of Pataliputra (modern Patna), the capital of the Maurya Empire.

That is why he was forced to earn his money by himself. After his secondary studies he took a job as a professor of maths in Ghent. At that time, Quetelet came in touch with arts like painting, music and literature. This also explains his interest for the measures of taille and weight of men and also for the literary production. * In 1819 Quetelet received his first doctorate in Ghent for a dissertation on the theory of conic sections. After having received this doctorate, he taught mathematics in Brussels. * Then, in 1823; he went to Paris to study astronomy at the observatory there. He learnt astronomy from Araga an Bouvard, and the theory of probability under Joseph Fourier and Pierre Laplace.Influenced by Laplace and Fourier, Quetelet was the first to use the normal curve other than as an error law. His studies of the numerical consistency of crimes stimulated wide discussions of free will versus social determinism.

The Mertens constant also known as the Hadamard-de la Vallee-Poussin constant (Plouffe), prime reciprocal constant (Bach and Shallit 1996, p. 234), or Kronecker's constant (Schroeder 1997), is a constant related to the twin primes constant and that appears in Mertens' second theorem

Of the myriad strategems I employ to avoid useful work, the one I most enjoy is to envision how scientists of earlier eras would have made use of modern computers and what effect it would have had on the science of their times - and ours. For example, I suspect that Newton's geometrically-based arguments for particle motion would have remained essentially untouched by the hand of the machine (although Newton might well have used a relational database to trace out the various biblical lineages that seemed to have occupied most of his time). On the other hand, it's likely that Kepler would have discovered much more than his three laws of planetary motion, perhaps even anticipating Newton's equations, had he had access to a Sun or SGI workstation. And there's no doubt in my mind that Gauss would have proved the Prime Number Theorem long before
