Christiaan Huygens Born: 14 April 1629 in The Hague, Netherlands Died: 8 July 1695 in The Hague, Netherlands Christiaan Huygens came from an important Dutch family. His father Constantin Huygens had studied natural philosophy and was a diplomat. It was through him that Christiaan was to gain access to the top scientific circles of the times. In particular Constantin had many contacts in England and corresponded regularly with Mersenne and was a friend of Descartes. Tutored at home by private teachers until he was 16 years old, Christiaan learned geometry, how to make mechanical models and social skills such as playing the lute. His mathematical education was clearly influenced by Descartes who was an occasional visitor at the Huygens' home and took a great interest in the mathematical progress of the young Christiaan. Christiaan Huygens studied law and mathematics at the University of Leiden from 1645 until 1647. Van Schooten tutored him in mathematics while he was in Leiden. From 1647 until 1649 he continued to study law and mathematics but now at the College of Orange at Breda. Here he was fortunate to have another skilled teacher of mathematics, John Pell . Hann átti einn bróður og tvær systur. Á 3. tug 17. aldar flutti Fermat til Bordeaux, en hafði áður stundað nám við háskólann í Toulouse. Hann hóf fyrstu alvarlegu rannsóknir sínar í stærðfræði í Bordeaux sem leiddu m.a. til athyglisverðra niðurstaðna varðandi útgildi falla. Frá Bordeaux flutti Fermat til Orléans og stundaði þar nám í lögfræði við háskólann. Hann lauk embættisprófi í lögfræði og gerðist lögmaður og opinber embættismaður við þingið í Toulouse. Hann bjó í Toulouse upp frá því, en starfaði jafnframt í heimabæ sínum, Beaumont-de-Lomagne og nágrannabænum Castres. Hann hlaut mikinn embættisframa og árið 1652 fékk hann skipun í æðsta embætti við glæpadómstól þingsins. Árin 1643 - 1654 var Fermat ekki í sambandi við stærðfræðisamfélagið í París, aðallega vegna annarrar vinnu en einnig vegna stríðsátaka í Frakklandi á þessum árum og afleiðinga þeirra í Toulouse. En á þessu tímabili vann Fermat þó að talnafræði, og er hann einmitt best þekktur vegna verka sinna innan þess sviðs stærðfræðinnar. Frægastur er hann að sjálfsögðu fyrir svokallaða Síðustu kenningu Fermats, en hún segir, að jafnan x n + y n = z n hafi enga heiltölulausn frábrugðna núlli fyrir x, y og z ef heila talan n er stærri en 2. Fermat ritaði í spássíu á þýðingu Bachet's á Arithmetica eftir Diophantus, að hann hefði fundið dásamlega sönnun á reglunni, en að spássían dygði ekki fyrir hana. On a retrouvé une dissertation géométrique parut, signée de ses initiales, en 1660, en annexe d'un volume sur la cycloïde publié à Toulouse par le père jésuite Antoine de Laloubère. En 1670, cinq ans après la mort de son père, Samuel Fermat fait paraître le "Diophante" de Bachet de Méziriac annoté de la main de Pierre Fermat, ainsi qu'un certain nombre de lettres de celui-ci. En 1679, il publie sous le titre "Varia Opera Mathématica" les oeuvres de son père qu'il a pu rassembler. Au début du XIXème siècle, sous le Consulat, on fit faire des copies des textes de Fermat conservés, depuis l'époque de Mersenne, dans les archives du couvent des Minimes de Paris. Il faudra attendre la fin du XIXème siècle, plus de 230 ans après sa mort, pour que paraisse enfin ce que l'on a pu retrouver de l'oeuvre de Fermat. Pourtant, dès l'annonce de son décès, certains de ses contemporains conscients de l'importance de ses recherches se préoccupaient de la conservation de ses écrits.
