Louis Antoine de Bougainville was a French explorer who spent over 12 years of his life circum-navigating the world. At his own expense, he took 2 ships (the Boudeuse and the Etoile ) in 1766 to form a colony in the Falkland Islands and guard the entrance to the Pacific. He was forced to hand the islands over to Spain. On his travels they stopped in Tahiti where they picked up one of the natives (possibly the chief's brother) who joined them on their exploratory voyage and was taken back to France with them. Although he didn't actually land on Australian soil, in 1768 he came from the Falklands into the Pacific. On the 6th of June he came across a great reef (now known as Bougainville Reef), an outlier of the Great Barrier Reef before an outbreak of scurvy prevented him from verifying his belief that this was the Australia del Espiritu Santo of Quiros, and soon afterwards found himself amongst the islands of the Louisdale Archipelago. Some important discoveries were made before shortage of supplies forced him to hurry around the north of New Zealand to the Dutch East Indies. Bougainville Islands and Louisdale Archipelago are named after him. SEARCH THIS WEBSITE FEEDBACK LINK US REFRESH ... CONTACT WEBMASTER

Louis-Antoine de Bougainville 's father was Pierre-Yves de Bougainville. He was a notary, that is a public official who authenticates writings such as deeds and takes affidavits, and depositions. It was not a profession which appealed to his son, Louis-Antoine, who made career decisions to avoid following in his father's footsteps. After completing his secondary schooling Bougainville was influenced by d'Alembert and he wrote in 1752. This extended 's book, written more that half a century earlier, to cover the integral calculus and also updated the differential calculus providing an up-to-date text. George writes in [1]:- It was published the following year ... This work led to Bougainville's election to the Royal Society of London in 1756. Also in 1756 he published a second volume but this marks the end rather than the beginning of his career as a mathematician. Bougainville then gave up mathematics. He had joined the army in 1754 and now, in 1756 [3]:-

BOUGAINVILLE, Louis Antoine de Voyage autour du Monde... Quarto, with 20 engraved charts, mostly folding, and three plates of boats; a few stains to endpapers and half-title but an excellent copy in handsome contemporary French cat's paw mottled calf, spine gilt with raised bands; contemporary armorial bookplate. First edition of Bougainville's narrative of his important voyage, the first French circumnavigation. Bougainville's description of his travels in the Pacific created enormous interest in Europe and was largely responsible for building up the romantic vision of a South Sea paradise where Rousseau's noble savage lived in a state of blissful innocence.
Bougainville's expedition passed through the Strait of Magellan in January 1768. After some time looking for the mythical "Davis Land", said to be off the Chilean coast, they started on a direct route across the Pacific. They discovered the Tuamotus, sighted Tahiti in April, then visited Samoa, sailed through Melanesia, sighted the Great Barrier Reef, and passed through the Solomons and New Britain, to Batavia.
Bougainville, not knowing of Wallis's stop there a year earlier, thought that he had discovered Tahiti, and his lengthy account of the island group is an interesting counterpart to Wallis's account. The vocabulary of three hundred words that he prints is the first such vocabulary of any Polynesian language to appear.

BOUGAINVILLE, Louis Antoine de Quarto, with 20 engraved charts (18 of them folding) and three plates of boats; contemporary ink annotations on half-title and title, one tear to a text-leaf repaired; French red morocco, gilt arms at centre of each side, gilt edges. First edition: the first French circumnavigation. Bougainville's account of his travels in the Pacific created enormous interest in France, and was largely responsible for building up the romantic vision of a South Sea paradise where Rousseau's noble savage lived in a state of blissful innocence.
Bougainville sailed from Nantes in November 1766 to the Falkland Islands. They picked up a supply ship, the Etoile, and both ships passed through the Strait of Magellan in January 1768, spent time looking for the mythical "Davis Land", said to be off the Chilean coast, and then started on a direct route across the Pacific. Bougainville discovered the Tuamotus, and in April sighted and thought he had discovered Tahiti, not knowing that Wallis had been there the previous year. He visited Samoa, sailed through Melanesia, sighted the Great Barrier Reef, and passed through the Solomons, and New Britain, to Batavia.
It was in fact only the Great Barrier Reef that prevented Bougainville landing on Australian soil. He had specifically set out to reach "New Holland" by running west from Quiros's "Espiritu Santo", but turned away from the obvious barrier presented by the Reef. Had he made it, "he would have come to the Australian coast near Cooktown, and would, likely enough, have been wrecked where Cook was wrecked two years later..." (Wood).
