Early History of Davenport
Capt. John P. Davenport,
circa 1852 by Alverda Orlando D avenport was founded in 1868. The original town was about a mile to the north of the present location near El Jarro Point. In the beautiful cove at the mouth of Agua Puerca Creek, Captain John P. Davenport built a 450 foot wharf. Timber, tanbark , cordwood, and cedar posts were loaded from the wharf onto small sailing vessels and shipped to San Francisco. Whaling gear and the blubber melting pots were located near the wharf. In 1906, the Santa Cruz Portland Cement Company started operation. The present town of Davenport was developed by the Coast Dairies and Land Company to house the workers at the cement plant. Most of the old landmarks from that period have been destroyed by various fires. Still standing is the old jail, which was built in 1914, and sits off the main highway on Center Street. Also still here is the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, at the end of Davenport Avenue. It was built in 1915; its interior is beautiful and well maintained and is always a subject for artists and art classes. . UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, PlaintiffAppellee,. v. HAROLDEDWARD davenport, a/k/a Pops,. Defendant-Appellant. No. 97-3286. (D. Kan.).

Keyword Case Docket Filed ... Added (11407 bytes) (7739 bytes) UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS TENTH CIRCUIT UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Plaintiff-Appellee v.
HAROLD EDWARD DAVENPORT, a/k/a Pops Defendant-Appellant
No. D. Kan. (D.Ct. No. 96-CR-40023-01 ORDER AND JUDGMENT Before SEYMOUR, BRORBY, and BRISCOE , Circuit Judges. After examining the briefs and appellate record, this panel has determined unanimously that oral argument would not materially assist the determination of this appeal. See Fed. R. App. P. 34(a); 10th Cir. R. 34.1.9. The case is therefore ordered submitted without oral argument. Mr. Davenport was convicted by a jury of five separate drug counts. He was sentenced to a total of eighty-eight months imprisonment, with the various sentences being served concurrently. On appeal, Mr. Davenport raises one issue: sufficiency of the evidence concerning all five counts. We review challenges to the sufficiency of the evidence de novo United States v. Jaynes , 75 F.3d 1493, 1498 (10th Cir. 1996). The evidence presented of Mr. Davenport's guilt on all charges is overwhelming. The evidence includes personal sales of cocaine by the defendant to a police officer; the discovery of extremely large amounts of pre-packaged cocaine in Mr. Davenport's residence; the testimony of a long-term customer of Mr. Davenport's operation; and the testimony of Mr. Davenport's partner. There was no contrary evidence. If the jury believed the witnesses, as it obviously did, there could be no other result than guilty verdicts on all five counts.
