Harold Davenport 's parents were Nancy Barnes and Percy Davenport. Nancy was the daughter of John Barnes who owned Perseverance Mill, and Percy worked for John Barnes, first as a clerk and later as the company secretary. Nancy and Percy had two children, Harold having a younger sister Grace. Harold attended Accrington Grammar School from the age of about ten years. His main interests were mathematics and chemistry [7]:- He was much inspired by his chemistry master, Mr Ackroyd, and by his mathematics mistress, Miss Heap, 'a lady with enthusiasm for mathematics, who paid no attention - thank God - to any regular syllabus or curriculum there may have been'. There were other subjects which interested Harold too, for he loved reading and read every Dickens classic that he could borrow from the local Public Library. In 1924 he obtained two scholarships to attend Manchester University, one from Lancashire County and a university scholarship. He studied mathematics and chemistry at Manchester being taught complex analysis by

The McCulley sisters searched for the family of their grandmother, Melissa "Lizzie" Whatley McCulley for over 44 years. During this time they collected thousands of Whatley records, visiting courthouses, grave yards, libraries and archives.from Virginia to Texas. As it turned out, Lizzie Whatley was a sister to my great grandfather, Charles W. Whatley. In 1993, shortly before she died, Dorothy McCulley allowed me to copy these files. She designated me to be the official custodian of the McCulley Files. These files were the beginning of my database. Names in this list of people born in 1920 and later have been removed. His main interests were mathematics and chemistry, and in 1924 he obtained a scholarship to attend Manchester University. He studied mathematics at Manchester being taught complex analysis by Mordell and applied mathematics by Milne . He graduated in 1927. After Manchester he went to Trinity College, Cambridge to take another 'first degree' which was a common thing to do at that time. Coxeter was among the friends he made at Cambridge. Coxeter wrote:- When Davenport was working for the Tripos he seemed wonderfully relaxed. He would give me a cheerful welcome whenever I dropped in to see him under the Clock in Trinity Great Court. I would find him listening to Scheherazade on the phonograph or reading Gibbon's 'Decline and Fall' for the third time. Davenport was most attracted by Littlewood 's lectures on the theory of primes and Besicovitch on almost periodic functions. Davenport wrote a Ph.D. thesis at Cambridge under

Introduction
The movement of families to wholly different regions of the country or, indeed,. to other countries is a fascinating aspect of human culture. The account of the movements of the Duclon family in The Julia Davenport and William Duclon Families is an example of this. The subject of the present document is another; it traces the development of the 'Chicagoland Davenports' from Mackinac Island to Calumet and the North Shore of Chicago from the late 1800s to the present day. 'A.J.' Davenport and Clara Hamann Andrew Jackson Davenport was born on Mackinac Island 6 December 1854, the last of the Ambrose Davenport, Jr.-Susan 0-gee-em-a-qua des Carreaux children. He grew to adulthood on the Island and there met, fell in love with, and on 23 July 1874 married an Island visitor, Clara Hamann, originally from Magdeburg, Germany. Clara was visiting her brother, Theodore Reese. (A more romantic version of this is presented later in a letter from my Aunt Edith.) In 1878 'A.J.' and Clara began a lifelong career in the United States Lighthouse Service, most of which was served as Keeper of the Calumet light at South Chicago, Illinois. Other lighthouses served included Waugoshance, Michigan; Twin River Point, Two Rivers, Wisconsin; Pentwater, Michigan; and Waukegan, Illinois.
