The President extended a hearty welcome to the guests who were present and expressed (he hope that they would have an enjoyable evening. Professor Aitken, he said, needed little introduction. He was born and educated in New Zealand, but after war-time service with the New Zealand Forces in the 1914-18 War, where he was seriously wounded, he returned to New Zealand and eventually went to Edinburgh in 1923 for post-graduate study in mathematics. The National Archives films include records of refugees who arrived in Poland from the east during the Second World War. They were anxious to prove their German ancestry, and therefore their right to remain on German soil. The paperwork that resulted includes a vast amount of information about the families, including birthdates and places, ancestry, places of residence, and the names of contacts in Germany. There are three basic sets of films covering the refugees. Two are in alphabetical order, and one is numeric, following the numbers assigned when the paperwork was done by the German authorities. The films are available through the U.S. National Archives and the Family History Centres. The E/G Kartei is the most important way to access the EWZ files. The numbers shown in these documents can be used to dig deeper into the collection. This list includes the range of each microfilm, as well as the roll lists from the National Archives (left) and the Family History Library (right).
