Endorsements Table of Contents In real-world problems related to finance, business, and management, mathematicians and economists frequently encounter optimization problems. In this classic book, George Dantzig looks at a wealth of examples and develops linear programming methods for their solutions. He begins by introducing the basic theory of linear inequalities and describes the powerful simplex method used to solve them. Treatments of the price concept, the transportation problem, and matrix methods are also given, and key mathematical concepts such as the properties of convex sets and linear vector spaces are covered. Endorsement: "The author of this book was the main force in establishing a new mathematical discipline, and he has contributed to its further development at every stage and from every angle. This volume ... is a treasure trove for those who work in this fieldteachers, students, and users alike. Its encyclopaedic coverage, due in part to collaboration with other experts, makes it an absolute must."S. George Dantzig
Born: 8 Nov 1914 in Portland, Oregon, USA
George Dantzig studied mathematics at the University of Maryland, receiving his A.B. in 1936. The following year he received an M.A. in mathematics from the University of Michigan. Dantzig worked as a Junior Statistician in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics from 1937 to 1939, then, from 1941 to 1946, he was head of the Combat Analysis Branch, U.S.A.F. Headquarters Statistical Control. He received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1946. In that year he was appointed Mathematical Advisor for USAF Headquarters. In 1947 Dantzig made the contribution to mathematics for which he is most famous, the simplex method of optimisation. It grew out of his work with the U.S. Air Force where he become an expert on planning methods solved with desk calculators. In fact this was known as "programming", a military term that, at that time, referred to plans or schedules for training, logistical supply or deployment of men. Dantzig mechanised the planning process by introducing "linear programming", where "programming" has the military meaning explained above. The importance of linear programming methods was described, in 1980, by Laszlo Lovasz who wrote:-

Hail the Giants
By Thomas Magnanti
magnanti@mit.edu

Every calling is great when greatly pursued.
It is fruitful at times to examine our roots, recalling previous accomplishments and seeking insight that might help in guiding our future. The past few months have provided me with this opportunity as I participated in a workshop in honor of Ralph Gomory's 70th birthday, and as I anticipate two sessions at the Philadelphia INFORMS meeting in honor of George Dantzig's 85th birthday. It is wonderful to honor these two giants of our profession and their extraordinary accomplishments, and to learn from their exceptional careers.
I have known George Dantzig for over 30 years. I was privileged to learn from him directly as my teacher and thesis Ph.D. advisor. I have "known" Ralph Gomory almost as long, but through his seminal research contributions rather than as a personal acquaintance. I believe that we might have met personally for the first time only about 10 years ago in his role as president of the Sloan Foundation. Nevertheless, both George Dantzig and Ralph Gomory have had a profound influence on my professional career, as they have on so many others.
George and Ralph have experienced different, although not dissimilar, career paths. George began his professional career at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (as a junior statistician), the U.S Air Force and the Rand Corporation. Later, in 1960 at the age of 46, he became an academic, first at the University of California at Berkeley and then at Stanford. Ralph started as an assistant professor at Princeton University and then joined IBM where he became an IBM Fellow and director of research. He eventually rose to the position of senior vice president of science and technology. He retired from IBM in 1989 to become president of the Sloan Foundation.

solve Linear Programming / Optimization problems
Description
Minimizes c'x , subject to and
Usage
solveLP( cvec, bvec, Amat, maximum=FALSE, maxiter=1000, zero=1e-10, lpSolve=FALSE, verbose=FALSE )
Arguments
cvec vector c (containing n elements). bvec vector b (containing m elements). Amat matrix A (of dimension m times n maximum logical. Should we maximize or minimize (the default)? maxiter maximum number of iterations. zero numbers smaller than this value (in absolute terms) are set to zero. lpSolve logical. Should the package 'lpSolve' be used to solve the LP problem? verbose an optional logic variable to indicate whether interim results should be printed.
Details
This function uses the Simplex algorithm of George B. Dantzig (1947) and provides detailed results (e.g. dual prices, sensitivity analysis and stability analysis).
If the solution x=0 is not feasible, a 2-phase procedure is applied.
Values of the simplex tableau that are actually zero might get small (positive or negative) numbers due to rounding errors, which might lead to artificial restrictions. Therefore, all values that are smaller (in absolute terms) than the value of zero (default is 1e-10) are set to 0.

Saturday, August 21, 1999 Jesus looked at them and said, "For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible."
(Mark 10:27 NRSV Dr. Robert Schuller, who is known for his emphasis on positive thinking or possibility thinking as he calls it, tells about a man he once met on a flight to Los Angeles. The man was a mathematician named George Dantzig. Schuller made the observation to Dantzig that this was the first time it had occurred to him that there was a field of endeavor to which positive thinking didn't apply. Mathematical problems have only one right answer, so they can't be affected in any way by how a person thinks. Dantzig said Schuller was wrong. Dantzig explained that during the Depression he had been a student of mathematics at the University of California-Berkeley. People were hungry and desperate for any job they could get. Dantzig, along with all his other classmates, desperately wanted the job of assistant teacher in the math department. Rumor had it that the person who scored the highest grade in a certain math course would get the job. Dantzig worked unbelievably hard in this one class. He was determined to be the high scorer. But on the day of the final exam, George Dantzig overslept. He got to the exam late. The teacher handed Dantzig a piece of paper with eight math problems on it. Dantzig thought he could handle those eight problems just fine, but then he noticed two more problems on the board. He finished the eight problems in the time allotted, but asked the professor for extra time to finish the last two. The professor gave him an extension on his exam.
