The Dantzig Prize was founded by a group of George B. Dantzig's former students (R. W. Cottle, E. L. Johnson, R. M. van Slyke, and R. J.-B. Wets). It is awarded jointly by this Society (MPS) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). "The prize is awarded for original work which, by its breadth and scope, constitutes an outstanding contribution to the field of mathematical programming... The contribution(s) for which the award is made must be publicly available and may belong to any aspect of mathematical programming in its broadest sense. The contributions eligible for consideration are not restricted with respect to the age or number of their authors although preference should be given to the singly-authored work of 'younger' people... The prize will be awarded every three years. The award will be presented at each International Symposium of MPS except every third time at a national meeting of SIAM, either the national (spring) or fall meeting of SIAM in the year of the award." The first awards of the Prize were made at the

    http://www.nobel.se/economics/laureates/1982/stigler-bio.html
I was born in Renton, a suburb of Seattle, Washington, in 1911. I was the only child of Joseph and Elizabeth Stigler, who had separately migrated to the United States at the end of the 19th century, my father from Bavaria and my mother from what was then Austria-Hungary (and her mother was in fact Hungarian). I attended schools in Seattle through the University of Washington , from which I was graduated in 1931. I spent the next year at Northwestern University
My main graduate training was received at the University of Chicago from which I received the Ph.D. in 1938. The University of Chicago then had three economists - each remarkable in his own way - under whose influence I came. Frank H. Knight was a powerful, sceptical philosopher, at that time vigorously debating Austrian capital theory but gradually losing interest in the details of economic theory . Jacob Viner was the logical disciplinarian, and equally the omniscient student of the history of economics. Henry Simons was the passionate spokesman for a rational, decentralized organization of the economy. I was equally influenced by two fellow students, W. Allen Wallis and Milton Friedman
The Chicago Economics Department was in intellectual ferment, although the central issues of the 1930's were very different from those in later times. I had never before encountered minds of that quality at close quarters and they influenced me strongly. For example, Knight supervised my thesis, which was on the history of production and distribution theories from 1870 to 1915

    The Basic George B. Dantzig
    - Book Review, by Cottle, Richard
    From the Publisher

George B. Dantzig, widely known as the father of linear programming, has been a major influence in mathematics, operations research, and economics. The 24 chapters of this volume highlight the amazing breadth and enduring influence of Dantzig's research. Short, non-technical summaries at the opening of each part of the book introduce a specific research area and discuss the current significance of Dantzig's work in that field. Among the topics covered are mathematical statistics, the Simplex Method of linear programming, economic modeling, network optimization, and nonlinear programming. The book also includes a complete bibliography of Dantzig's writings.

Books of collected or selected papers are treasures to be greatly valued, particularly when they collect the work of people who have had a significant impact on their field. We have just received several of these. The first, Donald E. Knuth's Selected Papers on Discrete Mathematics , is part of a series collecting Knuth's work. This volume, which focuses on discrete mathematics, is a real gem. Knuth writes well, and his papers are always interesting. Knuth's introduction notes that some of the papers were written purely as expositions of the work of other people, and that the rest contain material that was new at the time. But even in the latter case his goal was always to be understood: "I tried to make every paper self-contained, so that readers with a general mathematical background would be able to understand the details." In other words, non-specialists will enjoy this book. Most of the papers include addenda on further developments, so that in fact the book is not just a historical artifact but also a useful source of up-to-date information. As one might expect, the book is very well produced. Knuth says that these volumes present his work "in the form that I most wish people to remember it." He clearly means this not only in mathematical terms, but also in terms of book design and typography. This one you want to have.

Twenty-two journal articles, one abstract, and a book excerpt offer an overview of the career of the "father of linear programming." All authored or coauthored by Dantzig, the publications are organized into sections dealing with mathematical statistics, the simplex method of linear programming, large-scale linear programming, special applications and economic modeling, linear programming under uncertainty, network optimization, integer linear programming and linear inequalities, nonlinear programming, and complementarity problems. Editor Cottle (management science and engineering, Stanford U.) provides brief introductory commentary for each article, as well as a list of Dantzig's publications.
