1997 George B. Dantzig Dissertation Award
The George B. Dantzig Dissertation Award Committee is now accepting entries for the 1997 award. The award for the best OR/MS dissertation serves to promote greater interaction between academia and industry by encouraging researchers to conduct innovative research that is relevant to practice in any area of operations research and management science. The first and second place winners will receive awards of $800 and $400 respectively. Additional finalists will receive honorable mentions with $100 awards. Prizes will be awarded at the INFORMS National Fall Meeting in Dallas, Texas Oct. 26-29, 1997. Each entry must: 1) Consist of a doctoral dissertation written primarily by the entrant and completed between Jan. 1, 1996, and July 1, 1997. 2) Present original ideas obtained predominantly by the entrant. 3) Clearly illustrate and demonstrate the relevance of the work in practice and the potential impact in industry. Entrants should submit six copies of the following items before July 15, 1997: 1) A summary of the dissertation (less than 5 double-spaced pages) highlighting the significance of the problem, the novelty of the methodology approach, the contribution of the research to industry, and the scope of the dissertation.

Roles
Mathematicians not only study, but also research, and this must be given prominent mention here, because a misconception that everything in mathematics is already known is widespread among persons not learned in that field. In fact, the publication of new discoveries in mathematics continues at an immense rate in hundreds of scientific journals, many of them devoted to mathematics and many devoted to subjects to which mathematics is applied (such as theoretical computer science, physics or quantum mechanics).

    8 Nov 1914 -
George Dantzig, son of Tobias Dantzig (author of Number: The Language of Science), majored in mathematics at the University of Maryland, where his father then taught (it was cheaper than other schools, and the family was not well off). He began graduate work on a scholarship at the University of Michigan in 1936, and got his MA in 1937, but did not continue, due to his distaste for the abstractness of the mathematics he encountered there. After working for a while as a statistician in Seattle, he wrote in 1939 to Neyman, whose papers had interested him, and an assistantship was eventually arranged for him at Berkeley. This story from that period is a classic: "During my first year at Berkeley I arrived late one day to one of Neyman's classes. On the blackboard were two problems which I assumed had been assigned for homework. I copied them down. A few days later I apologized to Neyman for taking so long to do the homework the problems seemed to be a little harder to do than usual. I asked him if he still wanted the work. He told me to throw it on his desk. I did so reluctantly because his desk was covered with such a heap of papers that I feared my homework would be lost there forever. "

var TheAdcode = 'ad1874e'; The Unsolvable Math Problem Legend: A student arrives late to math class and finds two problems written on the chalkboard. Assuming they're homework problems, he jots them down in his notebook and works on the equations over the next few days before turning his solutions in to the instructor. Several weeks later, the professor turns up at the student's door with the student's work written up for publication. The two problems were not a homework assignment; they were problems previously thought to be unsolvable which the instructor had used as examples in his lecture that day.
    Variations:
    • One version of this story involves a student who arrives late for an exam and finds three problems to solve written on the blackboard. He solves the first two quite easily but has to struggle until time has almost run out to solve the third. Later that evening the student receives a phone call from his instructor, who explains that the third problem was not part of the test but was an example of a problem that mathematicians had been trying to solve for years without success.
Origins: This has to be one of the ultimate academic wish-fulfillment fantasies: a student not only proves himself the smartest one in his class, but also bests his professor and every other scholar in his field of study.
