David van Dantzig was at secondary school when he wrote his first mathematics paper. He was only thirteen years old at the time. However, his main interest in secondary school was not mathematics, rather it was chemistry. After leaving school he continued with his studies of chemistry, but this he did not enjoy and when he was forced to give up his academic studies to help support his family van Dantzig took on a number of jobs purely to make money. By now van Dantzig knew that mathematics was the subject which he really wanted to study but he was not in a position to do so, both because he had to earn money and also because he did not have the necessary school qualifications. He put in hours of work on mathematics in the evenings after finishing his money earning tasks for the day. He took the state mathematics examinations in 1921, at a higher level the following year and again in 1923 he passed at a higher level still. Entering the University of Amsterdam to study mathematics he soon passed examinations which took him essentially to Master's Degree level. Van Dantzig became an assistant to Schouten In this work he coined the now familiar term topological algebra but the thesis is memorable in other ways too. It [1]:-

List of Biographies
Berwald
Ludwig Berwald (1883-1942). Born in Prague. Studied mathematics in Munich and became a full professor at the German Charles University in Prague. His scientific work is mainly in differential geometry, notably on Finsler geometry and on spray geometry, i.e. , path spaces. He died in Poland after having been deported by the German authorities just because he was Jewish.
Bortolotti
Enea Bortolotti (1896-1934). Born in Rome. After a break during the First World War, he received his Ph.D. in 1920 at Pisa; he was particularly influenced by L. Bianchi. After teaching at the medical school, he became professor of geometry at the Univerity of Cagliari in 1928. From there he moved on to the same position at the University of Florence in 1934. Despite his premature death, Bortolotti published about a hundred papers, notably in differential geometry.
Cartan
Elie Joseph Cartan (1869-1951). Born in Dolomien near Chamb©ry, France. Student at l‘‰cole Normale since 1888, he received his Ph.D. in 1894 with a thesis in which he completed Killing’s classification of semisimple algebras. He lectured at Montpellier (1894-1903), Lyon (1896-1903), Nancy (1903-1909), and Paris (1909-1940). His following work on the representation of semisimple Lie groups combines group theory, classical geometry, differential geometry, and topology. From 1904 he worked on differential equations and differential geometry, and developed a theory of moving frames (calculus of differential forms). He also contributed to the geometry of symmetric spaces and published on general relativity and its geometric extensions as well as on the theory of spinors. For his Collected Works, cf.

Quotations by David van Dantzig
The mathematician may be compared to a designer of garments, who is utterly oblivious of the creatures whom his garments may fit. To be sure, his art originated in the necessity for clothing such creatures, but this was long ago; to this day a shape will occasionally appear which will fit into the garment as if the garment had been made for it. Then there is no end of surprise and delight. Neither in the subjective nor in the objective world can we find a criterion for the reality of the number concept, because the first contains no such concept, and the second contains nothing that is free from the concept. How then can we arrive at a criterion? Not by evidence, for the dice of evidence are loaded. Not by logic, for logic has no existence independent of mathematics: it is only one phase of this multiplied necessity that we call mathematics.
How then shall mathematical concepts be judged? They shall not be judged. Mathematics is the supreme arbiter. From its decisions there is no appeal. We cannot change the rules of the game, we cannot ascertain whether the game is fair. We can only study the player at his game; not, however, with the detached attitude of a bystander, for we are watching our own minds at play. The attempt to apply rational arithmetic to a problem in geometry resulted in the first crisis in the history of mathematics. The two relatively simple problems the determination of the diagonal of a square and that of the circumference of a circle revealed the existence of new mathematical beings for which no place could be found within the rational domain.

Report on a GMFW-program
Results
Key event of the program was the conference ``Uitbeelden in wiskunde'' (expressing in mathematics) held at September 22, 2000, at the University of Amsterdam's great hall. The well attended event, 175 vistors registrated, was very well recieved. Half of the visitors ordered in advance the three books published on the occasion, the biography, the conference proceedings and the Scientific Family Tree compiled by C. van Eeden. Next to the meeting of September 22 the program Van Dantzig 2000 offered a symposium at the Dutch Mathematical Congress and contributions to the National Mathematics Days, to the Annual Meeting on Statistics, and to a history of science meeting (GEWINA-symposium).
Spin-off
  • An important spin-off of the program Van Dantzig 2000 the opening of the David van Dantzig archive which will now be transfered to the National Archives (in its Haarlem establishment).
  • Inspired by Van Dantzig 2000 the Nieuw Archief voor Wiskunde is publishing a series of articles on the rise of mathematical modelling in the twentieth century: a century of mathematics and the real world.
  • Yet to come are a seminar, the CWI-Van Dantzig colloquium on mathematical modelling, and
