Villanova University, February 19, 2004. The United States Military Academy celebrated its centennial in 1902 but was it a vibrant intellectual center or a school with a hundred years of tradition unimpeded by progress? Since the study of mathematics occupied a substantial portion of the education of every graduate, this motivates us to look at all aspects of the department of mathematics: Who were the faculty? What was their education and experience? What was the curriculum? Which textbooks were used? How were the classes conducted? How did the department interact with the national mathematical community? How did world events impact the department? In terms of leadership, during the first half of the twentieth-century the history of the Department of Mathematics is rather simple because the department had only four Department Heads. Wright P. Edgerton served from 1898 to his death in 1904 and was succeeded by Charles P. Echols who served from 1904 until 1931 when he retired at the mandatory retirement age of 64. Because of that long term, he will be the major player in our story. Harris Jones took up the post in 1931 and served until 1947 when he became Dean of the Academic Board. Finally William W. Bessell, Jr., was Head from 1947 until 1959 when he became Dean.

Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination in Crocodilians

The sex of hatchling crocodilians is determined by the incubation temperature of eggs in the laboratory as well as in nature. The talk consists of two parts. The first part gives a review of the biological problem. Two experimental observations are used: that male fitness depends more strongly on the quality of the incubation environment than female fitness, and that females lay eggs at a temperature close to the temperature at which they themselves were incubated. In the second part, we derive a population genetics model based on the above mentioned biological concepts. A method for finding the optimal sex ratio as a function of temperature is developed and applied under different assumptions. Numerical solutions are given and compared with available experimental data.

    The old mathematicians(like Euclid: around 330 bc - around 275 bc) ran into the problem of solving a polynomial
    of degree 3 a very long time ago, when trying to find the solution for various geometrical challenges...(like the
    doubling of the volume of a cube, trisection of an angle..).All these problems cannot be solved by instruments
    like compasses or a ruler. There are clear indications that finding solutions for this particular problem even
    goes back to ancient Babylonia (approx. 2'000 bc). The Arabian mathematicians inspired the famous Italian
    mathematician Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci(1170 - 1250), who found a solution for a special cubic equation
    (where c = 2, see below) .He probably used an Arabic method of successive approximations.
    The general case(except the pardonable coefficient 1 with x ): P(x) = x + c x + c x + c The solution of a cubic polynomial is linked with the Renaissance mathematician Girolamo CARDANO , born Sept 24 th 1501 in Pavia.
