Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), Florentine artist, one of the great masters of the High Renaissance, celebrated as Early Life in Florence
In 1478 Leonardo became an independent master. His first commission, to paint an altarpiece for the chapel of the Palazzo Vecchio, the Florentine town hall, was never executed. His first large painting, The Adoration of the Magi (begun 1481, Uffizi), left unfinished, was ordered in 1481 for the Monastery of San Donato a Scopeto, Florence. Other works ascribed to his youth are the so-called Benois Madonna (1478?, Hermitage, Saint Petersburg), the portrait Ginevra de' Benci (1474?, National Gallery, Washington, D.C.), and the unfinished Saint Jerome (1481?, Pinacoteca, Vatican). Years in Milan
About 1482 Leonardo entered the service of the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, having written the duke an astonishing letter in which he stated that he could build portable bridges; that he knew the techniques of constructing bombardments and of making cannons; that he could build ships as well as armored vehicles, catapults, and other war machines; and that he could execute sculpture in marble, bronze, and clay. He served as principal engineer in the duke's numerous military enterprises and was active also as an architect. In addition, he assisted the Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli in the celebrated work Divina Proportione (1509).

LEONARDO DA VINCI
The Leonardo Da Vinci programme, pillar of lifelong learning
In today's economic climate Europe is facing a twofold challenge. First, there is a need to prepare European citizens b etter for entering the labour market, thereby reducing the number of unemployed. Second, companies need a skilled workforce to cope with rapid scientific and technological changes in an increasingly competitive world. To meet this challenge the European Commission's Leonardo da Vinci programme serves as a laboratory of innovation in the field of lifelong learning. Following its initial phase , from 1995 to 1999, the Community's Leonardo da Vinci vocational training programme is now in its second phase, covering the seven-year period from 2000 to 2006. The programme promotes transnational projects based on co-operation between the various players in vocational training - training bodies, vocational schools, universities, businesses, chambers of commerce, etc. - in an effort to increase mobility, to foster innovation and to improve the quality of training. The Leonardo da Vinci programme aims at helping people improve their skills throughout their lives.

NORWAY Project Description VALORISATION ACTIVITIES Norsk versjon Mandate Schedule Workshop Conference ... The Leonardo da Vinci Programme A Bridge Between Higher Education and Enterprise Through Vocational Training in Europe Leonardo da Vinci is the EU Commission's vocational training programme. " Valorisation " is a new (EU-) word for evaluation - with a positive sign. The main target to this project has been to show examples of good practice; what has worked well, but at the same time present what has not worked well, with recommandations for the next phase of the programme (Leonardo da Vinci, phase II started the 01.01.2000). The valorisation activities has included examination of six different succesful Norwegian projects through questionnaires, interviews, a workshop and a conference. The final results is presented in a report prepared for the Norwegian National Agency on the authority of the EU commission Managing editor: Paul Victor Verndal

Mona Lisa. In 1472, when Leonardo was twenty years old and having paid his guild fees, his name was officially inscribed on the roll of the Guild of St. Luke as a painter. While Leonardo was now fully qualified according to guild regulations and legally entitled to establish his own workshop, it seems he chose to remain at least four more years with his old teacher, Andrea del Verrocchio. Leonardo was twenty years old when it appears Lorenzo de Medici sent him to Milan to present Il Moro with the lyre . Leonardo was unsurpassed as a musician on this instrument and was evidently greeted with great applause when he played a lyre In about 1500 Leonardo produced his first designs for the now famous flying machine the scythed chariot and the armored car mechanical bows capable of hurling flaming missiles over a great distance. On land he envisioned military bridges, forts, and defensive works, while at sea he designed assault craft, floating battering rams, diving suits, and a mysterious scheme for destroying enemy ships by piercing them under the water line.

    Life
His life was described in Giorgio Vasari 's biography Vite. Leonardo was born in Vinci Italy . His father Ser Piero da Vinci was a well-off landowner or craftsman and his mother, Caterina, a peasant girl. It has been suggested that Caterina was a slave of middle eastern origin owned by Piero, but the evidence is scant. This was before modern naming conventions developed in Europe . Therefore, his full name was "Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci", which means "Leonardo, son of Piero, from Vinci". Leonardo himself simply signed his works "Leonardo" or "Io, Leonardo" ("I, Leonardo"). Most authorities therefore refer to his works as "Leonardos," not "da Vincis." Presumably he did not use his father's name because he was an
