International Left - Hander's Day International Left Hander's Day is a day that every left-handed person in the world should be celebrating. International Left-Hander's Day was first declared and celebrated on August 13, 1976 by an organization called Lefthanders International. Though not as well know as other holidays, it is a day to address the myths and misconceptions about left-handers. It is a day to pay tribute to famous left-handed artists, athletes, and entertainers, and to praise the creative talents of all of the less famous left-handers in society. Some may prefer a more somber observance, remembering the past prejudice which forced so many left-handed people to become right-handed and made their lives so difficult. No-one has come up with a definitive reason for WHY some people are left-handed, but about 10% of the population around the world are. No gene for left-handedness has been identified, but it does seem to run strongly in families. The brain is "cross-wired" so that the left hemisphere controls the right handed side of the body and vice-versa and hand dominance is connected with brain dominance on the opposite side. A few left handed facts: 4 of the 5 original designers of the Macintosh computer were left-handed.

'Prime Obsession'
By JOHN DERBYSHIRE ike many other performances, this one begins with a deck of cards. Take an ordinary deck of 52 cards, lying on a table, all four sides of the deck squared away. Now, with a finger slide the topmost card forward without moving any of the others. How far can you slide it before it tips and falls? Or, to put it another way, how far can you make it overhang the rest of the deck? The answer, of course, is half a card length, as you can see in Figure 1-1. If you push it so that more than half the card overhangs, it falls. The tipping point is at the center of gravity of the card, which is halfway along it. Now let's go a little further. With that top card pushed out half its length-that is, to maximum overhang-over the second one, push that second card with your finger. How much combined overhang can you get from these top two cards? The trick is to think of these top two cards as a single unit. Where is the center of gravity of this unit? Well, it's halfway along the unit, which is altogether one and a half cards long; so it's three-quarters of a card length from the leading edge of the top card (see Figure 1-2). The combined overhang is, therefore, three-quarters of a card length. Notice that the top card still overhangs the second one by half a card length. You moved the top two cards as a unit. If you now start pushing the third card to see how much you can increase the overhang, you find you can push it just one-sixth of a card length. Again, the trick is to see the top three cards as a single unit. The center of gravity is one-sixth of a card length back from the leading edge of the third card (see Figure 1-3).

Nico (circa May 2002) Yes, Nico's first set of legs are #2 pencils Nico is a quadruped robot which is based upon principles of 4-legged locomotion illustrated in nature. The background for Nico's basic body plan and leg design can be found on our page about locomotion in 4-legged creatures . The present implementation is a greatly simplified form of nature's own plan, but one which can still perform movements in a similar manner. Nico's purpose is the study of various gait possibilities. Nico is named after Nicole d'Oresme , who was one of the first to make the logical connection between geometry, numbers, and algebra - essentially the idea of graphs - about 200 years before "Mr. Cartesian Coordinates" Rene Descartes was born. Nico has been designed to be easily extended and eminently hackable. The following describes the basic design plan and goals for this project. Capabilities Goals

    Aristotle http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/PictDisplay/Aristotle.html
400 BC – 300 BC Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) studied matter, change, movement, space, position, and time over his lifetime and wrote many philosophical and metaphysical books including Physica (Kuhn 10). Aristotle thought that the motion of bodies held back understanding of gravitation for a long time. He believed that force could only be applied by contact, a force from a distance was impossible, and in order for a body to remain in uniform motion a constant force was needed (123). Nicole Oresme http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/PictDisplay/Oresme.html
1300 AD – 1400 AD Jean Buridan (? – 1358) wrote two commentaries on De Caelo , a natural philosophy book by Aristotle, which dealt with the universe, the planets, and sublunar motion (the motion of heavy and light objects). The first commentary explained exactly what Aristotle meant in the book and the second described a set of difficult problems and then their solution. Buridan included problems about whether the planets moved without friction, whether the earth is at rest in the center of the universe and what is the cause of the tides (119-120). Nicole Oresme (1323 – 1382) opposed the theory of the Earth being stationary as proposed by Aristotle and he even taught about the motion of the Earth. This was 200 years before Copernicus would popularize the notion. However, Oresme later rejected his own ideas.

Nicholas Oresme, whose name is given in French as Nicole Oresme, was of Norman origin. Nothing is known of his early life, and the first that is known is that he studied for an Arts Degree in Paris in the early 1340s where he was taught by Jean Buridan at the University of Paris. Buridan was a philosopher and logician who made contributions to probability, optics and mechanics. He added to Aristotle 's theory of motion by understanding that motion was retarded by resistance from the air. Although his views were in many respects close to those of Ockham , he disagreed with some of Ockham 's views and attacked them in 1340. About 35 years later the followers of Ockham would retaliate by placing Buridan's works on the Index of Forbidden Books. Buridan had a major influence in interesting Oresme in natural philosophy and in encouraging him to question the ideas of Aristotle Oresme's name appears on the list of scholarship holders in theology at the College of Navarre at the University of Paris in the year 1348. He was awarded the degree of Master of Theology in 1355 and, in the following year, he was appointed as Grand Master of the College of Navarre. Not long after this Oresme became friendly with the dauphin Charles who went on to become Charles V of France in 1362. The friendship between Charles and Oresme was one which continued throughout their lives. Charles was in intellectual and religious man who enjoyed the company of scholars such as Oresme.

    Nicole d' Oresme
After studying theology in Paris, Nicole Oresme was bursar in the University of Paris, then canon and later dean of Rouen. In 1370 he was appointed chaplain to King Charles V and advised him on financial matters. Oresme invented coordinate geometry before Descartes, finding the logical equivalence between tabulating values and graphing them. He proposed the use of a graph for plotting a variable magnitude whose value depends on another. It is possible that Descartes was influenced by Oresme's work since it was reprinted several times over the 100 years following its first publication. Another work by Oresme contains the first use of a fractional exponent, although, of course, not in modern notation. He is also credited with the rules of exponents: x m x n = x m+n (x m n = x mn . For each rule, specific examples and applications were given. Even more imaginative was his suggestion that irrational powers are possible. Oresme also worked on infinite series. He was the first to prove that the harmonic series diverges. Oresme also opposed the theory of a stationary Earth as proposed by Aristotle and taught motion of the Earth, 200 years before Copernicus. However he spoiled this fine piece of thinking by rejecting his own ideas in the end. He also wrote a work dealing with the nature of light, reflection of light, and the speed of light.

Nicole Oresme and the Latitude of Forms Nicole Oresme was born in northern France in 1323. As a young man he studied theology, philosophy, and logic in Paris. He was friends with King Charles the Fifth of France, and he eventually became a bishop. Oresme translated books by Aristotle on ethics and astronomy into French. He also wrote commentaries on Aristotle's books, and wrote books of his own on topics such as astronomy and economics. Like other medieval philosophers, Oresme was interested in measuring "forms". Forms were an idea of Aristotle's; they included qualities like the velocity of a moving object and the temperature at different places in a material. The medieval discussions of these concepts were very long and complicated. Oresme decided to simplify them by drawing a picture. Oresme made a graph of velocity versus time for an object moving with constant acceleration, like a falling ball. He marked moments of time, which he called longitudes , along a horizontal line. For each moment he drew a bar or

Nicole d'Oresme érvei a Föld mozgása mellett
