Jean-Baptiste d'Alembert (Paris, 1717 - idem, Filósofo e cientista francês. Abandonado pelos pais, um vidreiro recolhe-o e fá-lo estudar Matemáticas e Direito com uma pensão entregue pelo seu pai. Em 1741, com apenas vinte e quatro anos, ingressa na Academia Francesa e, a partir de 1772, é secretário perpétuo. Frequenta os principais salões literários de Paris, e muito particularmente o de Julie de Lespinasse, a quem permanece ligado toda a sua vida. Está em contacto contínuo com soberanos como Frederico II da Prússia e Catarina II da Rússia, que lhe oferecem empregos nas suas cortes, que ele recusa. A figura de D'Alembert está especialmente ligada à Enciclopédia, que dirige juntamente com Diderot até 1758. Jean-le-Rond D'Alembert Jean-le-Rond D'Alembert was born at Paris on November 16, 1717, and died there on October 29, 1783. He was the illegitimate child of the chevalier Destouches. Being abandoned by his mother on the steps of the little church of St. Jean-le-Rond, which then nestled under the great porch of Notre-Dame, he was taken to the parish commissary, who, following the usual practice in such cases, gave him the Christian name of Jean-le-Rond; I do not know by what authority he subsequently assumed the right to prefix de to his name. He was boarded out by the parish with the wife of a glazier in a small way of business who lived near the cathedral, and here he found a real home, though a humble one. His father appears to have looked after him, and paid for his going to a school where he obtained a fair mathematical education. Kurz nach der Geburt wurde er von seiner Mutter auf den Stufen einer Kirche ausgesetzt. Zur damaligen Zeit war es üblich, Findlingskinder nach ihrem Fundort zu benennen. Daher taufte man den Säugling auf Jean le Rond. Er wuchs als Adoptivsohn einer armen Glaserfamilie auf. Sein leiblicher Vater, der Offizier Destouches, erkannte seinen Sohn niemals offiziell an. Dennoch ermöglichte er ihm durch seine großzügige finanzielle Unterstützung die beste Ausbildung. D'Alembert, wie er sich mit zwölf Jahren nannte, besuchte ein jansenistisches Collège. Danach begann er zunächst das Theologiestudium, begeisterte sich jedoch bald für die Fächer Mathematik, Medizin und Jura. Comme Diderot paraissait trouver tout cela fort bien, qu'il ne doutait pas du succès, et que j'avais avec lui trop d'autres débats pour disputer encore sur cet article, je ne lui dis rien; mais indigné de tout ce manège de séduction dans ma patrie, j'attendais avec impatience le volume de l' Encyclopédie où était cet article, pour voir s'il n'y aurait pas moyen d'y faire quelque réponse qui pût parer ce malheureux coup. Je reçus le volume peu après mon établissement à Montlouis, et je trouvai l'article fait avec beaucoup d'adresse et d'art, et digne de la plume dont il était parti. Cela ne me détourna pourtant pas de vouloir y répondre, et malgré l'abattement où j'étais, malgré mes chagrins et mes maux, la rigueur de la saison et l'incommodité de ma nouvelle demeure, dans laquelle je n'avais pas encore eu le temps de m'arranger, je me mis à l'ouvrage avec un zèle qui surmonta tout.
