ABSTRACT: Nicholas of Cusa (1401-64) was a philosopher and theologian whose writings influenced the development of Renaissance mathematics and science. The first part of this paper will trace the historical development in the West of thought about the Infinite prior to the time of Nicholas of Cusa. The second part of the paper will discuss his philosophy as presented in his major work, On Learned Ignorance . The third part of the paper will then examine the subsequent development of thought about the Infinite and the ways in which Nicholas of Cusa influenced mathematics and science.
Preface: A Meditation on the Infinite
According to the movement of reason, plurality or multitude is opposed to unity. Hence, it is not a unity of this sort which properly applies to God, but the unity to which neither otherness nor plurality nor multiplicity is opposed. This unity is the maximum name enfolding all things in its simplicity of unity, and this is the name which is ineffable and above all understanding.[1] What is the Infinite? To define it as other than the finite is to set the infinite apart from the finite, and thereby limit it. To define the infinite, therefore, is to make it

Nicholas of Cusa (ca. 1400 - August 11 ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church , a philosopher , and an astronomer . He was born in Kues, Germany (hence "of Cusa") to a merchant family, and received his doctorate in canon law from the University of Padua in 1423. After a successful career as a papal legate, he was made a cardinal by Pope Nicholas V in 1448 or 1449, and was named Bishop of Brixon in 1450. His work as bishop was opposed by Duke Sigmund of Austria; the duke imprisoned Nicholas in 1460, for which Pope Pius II excommunicated Sigmund and laid an interdict on his duchy. Nicholas of Cusa was never able to return to his bishopric, however: Sigmund's capitulation in 1464 came a few days after Nicholas's death at Todi in Umbria Nicholas of Cusa was noted for his deeply mystical writings about Christianity , particularly the nature of the Trinity . Many believe he was influenced in this by the work of Thomas a Kempis . He was suspected by some of holding pantheistic beliefs, but his writings were never accused as being

Up Nicolas of Cusa and Ibn 'Arabi: Two Philosophies of Mysticism Andrey V. Smirnov The rich traditions of European and Arabic mysticism were both made the subject of philosophical reflection. In this essay, I will investigate the way in which the mystical outlook was rationalized in the philosophies of Nicholas of Cusa and Ibn 'Arabi. The fundamental differences between these two thinkers may be revealed by exposing their treatment of such essential problems as the relation of Cod to the world, the place and role of humanity in the world, and humanity's cognitive potential. In the final part of the essay, I will analyze the implications of these two philosophies for the subsequent development of Western and Arabic philosophical thought. I The common basis underlying a philosophical exploration of Nicholas of Cusa and Ibn 'Arabi could perhaps be presented in the form of two closely linked assertions: first, the thesis that Cod is indefinable, and, second, a formula which states that

    56. Helga Zepp LaRouche: A Contribution For Nicholas Of Cusa's 600th Birthday

This address appears in the July 6, 2001 issue of Executive Intelligence Review.
    A Contribution for
    Nicolaus of Cusa's 600th Birthday:
    A Dialogue of Cultures
by Helga Zepp LaRouche The following speech was delivered on May 6, 2001, at a conference of the Schiller Institute in Bad Schwalbach, Germany . Subheads have been added. An audio/video version is also available. It is an extraordinary joy for me to speak about my good friend, Nicolaus of Cusa. And, given the fact that it is his birthday somewhere between April and June, he will be 600 years old. And I really mean the joy of a friend having a birthday, because when a friend has a birthday, you realize that without this individual, the world would be so much poorer. And I hope that with my remarks I will interest you in studying Nicolaus of Cusa, his ideas and concepts, so that he becomes one of your dear friends, too, if he is not so already. The reason why this particular man is so extraordinarily important is, because it was his ideas which gave the beautiful, Italian Renaissance, the Golden Renaissance of Florence, an even higher expression, because he was the towering genius among all the many geniuses who came together at that point. And it was this unbelievable, fantastic explosion of human creativity expressed in this Renaissance, which succeeded in overcoming the Dark Age of the Fourteenth century. And it is more urgent than ever before, to study the example of the Golden Renaissance, to find the clues to how we can overcome the Dark Age of today.

Nicholas of Cusa (1400/1401-1464, in German called Nikolaud von Kues) Cardinal, after studies in Heidelberg, Padova, Bologna, Cologne entered the clergy and became papal diplomat. Present at the COUNCIL OF BASEL 1421, he was sent as papal emissary to Constantinople in 1437, won the Emperor and other potentates for the COUNCIL OF FLORENCE, was engaged in organizing a crusade against the Turks and in negotiating reconciliation with the Hussites.
Despite his diplomatic activities, Cusa found the time to write, in many fields - juridical, theological, philosophical texts as well as scientific ones, in mathematics and astronomy.
JOHANN MUELLER of Koenigsberg/Franconia, after which he called himself REGIOMONTANUS (1436-1476) was in 1461 appointed professor of philosophy (his speciality was astronomy) in Vienna. Here he met GEORGE OF TREBIZOND, a learned Greek who now was papal legate. Regiomontanus was appointed astronomer of King MATTHIAS CORVINUS of Hungary in 1468, built an observatory at NUERNBERG in 1471. Called to Rome by Pope Sixtus IV., he died before he could be appointed to further offices.
Regiomontanus made a number of important astronomic observations, paving the way for Copernicus and Kepler.
