NICHOLAS OF CUSA
Since the divine in us is certainly not vain, we need to know that we are ignorant. If we can attain this end completely, we shall attain 'learned ignorance'. For nothing becomes a man, even the most zealous, more perfectly in learning than to be found very learned in ignorance itself, which is his characteristic, and anyone will he the more learned the more he knows his own ignorance. De docta ignorantia NICHOLAS OF CUSA Everything craves its contrary, and not for its like", Socrates reports hearing a statesman say; "the dry craves for moisture, the cold for heat, the bitter for sweetness, the sharp for bluntness, the empty to be filled, the full to be emptied." This affirmation in the Lysis of the universal play of opposites in the realm of phenomena applies ironically to the history of the church in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Innocent III, pope from 1198 to 1216, first realized the practical possibility of extending the spiritual and temporal rule of the church across the whole of Europe. His most spectacular success was the submission of England where, under John and Henry III, he ruled de jure and de facto through his legates. Those who followed him pursued the policies of an imperial papacy. Even as the attendant bureaucracy began to embrace the continent, two countervailing forces arose: the burgesses emerged as a business-oriented class with distinctly secular attitudes, whilst rulers and ministers who had once built kingdoms around their courts increasingly thought in terms of nation-states. The former mocked the religious decadence of a church flagrantly panting after gold, and the latter sought to divert that gold into national treasuries.

Nicholas of Cusa's
Ubi est qui natus est rex Iudaeorum?
(Where is he that is born king of the Jews? (1456))
Translated by Clyde Lee Miller , SUNY Stonybrook Dept. of Philosophy
1. Beyond the points which I have written in other sermons about this feast when I was preaching on this day in various places, I would now like to add an interpretation of its theme. The wise men had no doubts that the king of the Jews was born, but they made inquiries where he might be. That nation had the king of kings "who dwells in heaven" in place of a king and he ruled the same Jewish people through Moses and the prophets. And then he who spoke to the people through the prophets said, "Here I am," and "he was seen upon the earth and conversed [with men]," just as he had predicted that he would come. And so the magi were sure from the star that one who was to come was born and without hesitation asked where he might be. 3. Yet we should nott bother with these conjectures, but notice that the magi were led by a visible sign which went before them in the form of a star. In that sign they were made certain that he was born. From him [comes] all wisdom. He should be sought, recognized, and adored by all the wise men of this world. 4. The words of our theme which must now be expounded, can first be understood "dispositively" in accord with Meister Eckhart's

"God, therefore, is the one most simple essence of the entire universe..."
(p. 120)
... the essence of all essences is each essence in such a way that it is all essences together and none of them individually...
(p. 108)
God is not something... God is beyond nothing and beyond something... God cannot be called "this" rather than "that"...
(p. 211)
For God is not the root of contradiction, but God is the simplicity itself prior to every root...
(p. 212)
... God's simplicity precedes both all that can be named and all that cannot... (p. 213) ... neither God nor God's name is to be found in the realm of all creatures and ... God flees from every concept rather than being asserted as something. For that which does not have the condition of a creature is not to be found in the realm of creatures. In the realm of composite things the non-composite is not found... And even though ... composite things are what they are only through the non-composite, yet because it is not composite, it is unknown in the realm of composite things. (p. 213)

Nicholas of Cusa (1401-64)
Nikolaus Krebs. Theologian who in his De docta ignorantia endorsed the idea of other inhabited worlds: Life, as it exists on Earth, in the form of men, animals and plants, is to be found, let us suppose, in a higher form in the solar and stellar regions. . . . Of the inhabitants then of worlds other than our own we can know less, having no standards by which to appraise them. It may be conjectured that in the Sun there exist solar beings, bright and enlightened denizens, and by nature, more spiritual than such as may inhabit the Moon - who are possibly lunatics . . . He therefore went much further than those scholastics of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including William of Ockham , Jean Buridan , and William Vorilong , who merely asserted that it would have been possible for God to have created other worlds should he have chosen to do so. Considering the fate of another Middle Age cleric, Giordano Bruno , who expounded pluralism , it might be assumed that Nicholas would have seriously upset the Church with his views. In fact, however, he went on to become a Catholic cardinal. See

Tyrone Lai Nicholas of Cusa and the Finite Universe Abstract A number of authorsfrom Kepler to Koyrehave held the view that the universe as Nicholas of Cusa thinks of it is infinite. Recent authors, however, are careful to point out that it is not clear in what sense Cusanus thinks of the universe as infinite. It is shown in this paper that Cusanus thinks of the universe as infinite only in the sense that God has the power of creating a universe greater than the present one, but the present universe is finite, and according to Nicholas of Cusa necessarily so, even though beyond the universe there is nothing else, that is, nothing material. If Cusanus was instrumental in re-introducing the idea of an infinite universe (as later authors understood it), it would seem it was not what he intended.
