Professor Crighton will explain how applied mathematics research holds the key for future developments in engineering. The applied mathematical modelling skills will be presented with applications in the physical sciences and technology to show how these approaches give results of information not otherwise available. This includes the understanding of the basic processes in balance at any stage, along with the associated scaling laws and design rules that follow from such understanding. Numerical predictive capability and the identification of clear possibilities and mechanisms for control of behaviour and performance of components in industrial processes will be explained. Council endorses CDC Workfare scheme
Monday, 12 April 1999 Early this evening, the Christchurch City Council endorsed its involvement with the abhorrent Workfare scheme as run by its employment arm. Two months ago, this employment arm, Canterbury Development Corporation, was asked to report on its own involvement in the controversal Community Wage (work-for-the-dole) scheme. Today, this report was presented to the Strategy and Resources Committee. The chair, Cr David Close, attempted to table (accept) the report but Cr Carole Anderton repeatedly requested that it be debated first. David eventually conceded. Carole and Cr Anna Crighton raised many concerns about the scheme; like how CDC got involved without telling the Council, the lack of community consultation, how CDC got a special contract with the WINZ welfare department when others can't, and how the Council can endorse government policy without the issue being debated first. David Close said that the Council had been working with the Labour Department since 1979 on job schemes under many acronyms and the only difference with the current Community Wage scheme was that nobody had come up with an acronym for it. Anna disagreed, saying it carried sanctions affecting dole payments. The employment manager for CDC, Brigit Lenihan, said that the contract it has with WINZ runs out on June 30. A motion to endorse the existing contract and let it run its course was strongly carried, with only councillors Carole Anderton and Anna Crighton voting against it. They ask that their votes against the endorsement be recorded, while Cr Denis O'Rourke asked that his vote for the endorsement also be recorded.

Star-Bulletin KAILUA-KONA Peggy Risley of New Hampshire and Linda Crighton of Captain Cook first met Friday night at a luau. On Sunday, they were reunited in grief. Henry "Hank" and Peggy Risley had struck up a conversation with Crighton and her fiance, Wade Abac Sr., across the table. "We just started talking," said Peggy Risley. "They were very open people and just very friendly." The Risleys learned that Abac booked adventure trips at the Aston Keauhou Beach Resort, where they were vacationing. The next day, Abac learned that Hank Risley and his 71-year-old stepmother, Nora, were booked on an around-the-island sightseeing flight. "He said, 'I'm going to get on that flight with you guys this afternoon,' and we said, 'Yeah, that would be great,'" Peggy Risley said. She said she did not go because she felt she would be claustrophobic in the small plane.

Conference of Heads of Departments of Mathematical Sciences
Minutes of the Committee Meeting held at UCL on 18th May 1995, commencing at 11.30am.
Present: Allan Norcliffe (Sheffield Hallam) in the Chair, Mike Atkinson (St Andrews), David Bartholomew (RSS), Ken Brown (LMS), Martin Everett (Greenwich), Ekkehard Kopp (Hull), David Larman (UCL), Adrian Lepper (IMA), Allan Ryley (Glamorgan), Graham Wilks (Keele). 1. Membership and Apologies: Mike Atkinson, David Bartholomew and Ken Brown were welcomed to their first meeting of the Committee. Apologies for absence had been received from Mike Crampin, David Crighton and Donald Davison, all of whom had engagements i n their home institutions. 2. The minutes of the meeting held on 26th January 1995 were approved. 3. Matters arising form the minutes: Min 3: No action had yet been taken on the issue of advertising of courses. It was agreed to set up a HoDoMS Home Page on the World Wide Web, which could encourage member departments to use this facility in preference to commercial publishers for making courses known to prospective applicants, and to take part in promoting UK Mathematics, rather than use resources for competition. (Action: Mike Atkinson and Ekkehard Kopp) Min 5: RAE follow-up: it was reported that the mathematics panels would be chaired by Barry Johnson (Pure), David Crighton (Applied) and Mike Titterington (Statistics). The full panels should be known soon, and it was intended that clear decisions on cri teria and procedures would be communicated to the mathematical community in the early autumn. The Committee agreed that it might not be appropriate to ask any panel chairman to lead an item on this at the AGM, but that the Committee should endeavour to pr ovide any information available at the time. There might be a need for a further HoDoMS meeting in the winter to monitor preparations for the RAE in March 1996; meanwhile, we could press the concerns raised in our submission (which had received no respons e so far). (Action: Ekkehard Kopp)

Schedule May 15, 2000 Comments on the Batchelor/Crighton Memorial Lectures George Keith Batchelor (1920-2000) was a towering figure in fluid mechanics and contributed profoundly to many of its subareas, among them the theory of homogeneous turbulence and microhydrodynamics. As the founding editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, a position he held for more than forty years, George exerted a profound influence on fluid dynamics and set exacting standards. He founded and led for some thirty years the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge, and made it possible for generations of first-rate fluid dynamicists to come together. George was instrumental in developing EUROMECH as a major force for mechanics in Europe. A long list of monographs of great quality and longevity emerged during his editorship for forty-five years of Cambridge Monographs on Mechanics and Applied Mathematics. David George Crighton (1942-2000) was an accomplished fluid dynamicist with particular expertise in aeroacoustics and the interaction of vortex flows with solid surfaces. He was admired for his applied mathematics skills and for his leadership of the fluid dynamics community in the world at large, within Cambridge in particular. In 1986, he became a professor of applied mathematics at Cambridge and took over the headship of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in 1991. He succeeded George Batchelor as the editor of Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and was the Master of Jesus College since 1997. David's cheerfulness, commitment and continued hardwork, even while suffering from cancer for a year or so before his untimely death, were phenomenal and universally admired.

The Crighton Theater
- 60 Years of History -
The Early Years The Challenge Shortly after the closing of the Crighton, The Little Theatre of Conroe (LTC) was formed in 1969. The LTC held their productions in the old Hunt Plumbing Building at the corner of Galveston and Robertson Streets. However, due to the limited seating and stage facilities, the LTC had been looking for a new home for several years. In 1976, Frank and Hallie Crighton Guthrie, the owners of the Crighton Theatre, began exploring the possibility of donating the theater to the county. After discussing the idea with Chuck Stealey, their financial administrator, they asked Stealey to present the idea to Bruce Scott, then president of the Conroe Chamber of Commerce. The Guthries' only stipulations were that the Crighton name be maintained, that the theater be primarily used for the performing arts, and that the Little Theatre of Conroe be the resident theater group. The Montgomery County Foundation for the Performing Arts ( The Crighton Theatre Foundation ) was formed to accept the gift of the old Crighton Theatre on behalf of the residents of Montgomery County.
