Obituary: David Crighton
By John Brindley
It is with the greatest sadness and sense of personal loss that we record the untimely death of David Crighton, at the age of 57, on April 12th. David's contributions to the development of "nonlinear mathematics", and especially of its ubiquitous importance in modern applied mathematics, where, in many situations the essential qualitative character of system behaviour is nonlinear, and not amenable to linear approximations.. His energy and perception led a group of us in Leeds to form in 1984, a Centre for Nonlinear Studies, (CNLS) of which he was properly the first Director. I had the task of succeeding him in 1986 on his departure to Cambridge, but by then the foundations had been laid and momentum generated. David's pressure within the then SERC was important in securing the Nonlinear Science (NLS) Initiative in the next 5 years, and even more so in securing its successor, Applied Nonlinear Mathematics (ANM), whose Scientific Committee I had the privilege of chairing from 1993-96.

David Crighton Medal 2003
Warm congratulations to John Ball, who is to be the recipient of the first David Crighton Medal, awarded by the LMS and the IMA.
Citation
The David Crighton Medal for 2003 for services to Mathematics and to the mathematics community is awarded to Professor John Ball, F.R.S., Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy in the University of Oxford (currently on sabbatical leave at Princeton University, USA). John Ball is an outstanding mathematician of international standing. At the same time he has exerted himself both nationally and internationally for the good of Mathematics and its community. In particular, his activity internationally has done much to raise the profile of UK Mathematics, especially of Applied Mathematics. He has an exceptional record of getting things done and making things happen - in this he demonstrates the qualities of David Crighton himself. Nationally, he was very effective in pressing for and establishing an Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Scotland; it was very much due to his efforts that the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences was set up in Edinburgh more than 10 years ago. Over the years it has been, and remains, an important national asset and one whose programmes are complementary to those of the Isaac Newton Institute. John Ball was President of the London Mathematical Society from 1996-1998, and led the Society's moves throughout that period to increase its activity and influence in its promotion of mathematics and its links with other bodies.

Chemical Alice
An entirely personal history by David Weston In The Beginning... Most of what follows was kick started by my first visit to the Stonehenge free festival in June 1980. Unlike the massive gatherings of 1983 and 1984 this was a smaller much more communual affair deriving much of it's energy and identity from groups such as the Tibetan Ukranian Mountain Troupe and the Tepee people. One particular night's entertainment remains fresh and powerful in my memory, an all night session in the Tibetan's wonderful blue and white striped marquee featuring such bands as Thandoy and the You band (rather Gong like as you would expect). As a result of that experience much of the music that followed attempted in some way to re-create the spacey, free-flowing and yes, psychedelic jams first heard at Stonehenge. In fact to this day among close friends who understand such mysteries, certain music will evoke the cry, 'sounds like a tent at Stonehenge music'! Chemical Alice Line-Up 1 September 1980

Jordan Average review score: Good book, a little dated Yes, this book did help my esperanto a little, but some of the language is a tad dated. You'd be better off learning it from the internet. Jordan has a real feel for the language. While a straightforward and logical tongue, Esperanto is not English, and beginners tend to think English-ly while writing Esperanto-ly. (And that last sentence is just one of the many ways I could use to demonstrate that one must adjust one's thinking just a tad to become more fluent and universally understood when learning to be more proficient in the language.)
A *very* useful book! There are some fine introductory books in Esperanto (and you can get a pretty good start from the free 10-lesson email course easily found with any internet search engine); this book is probably not the best FIRST textbook (though I think it could be used as a first book without too much trouble), but it is an AMAZING second book, with more information on subtleties of expression in Esperanto (and there are *some* it's still a foreign language, albeit one with a very regular grammar, and its logic is not always identical to the logic (such as it is) behind English) than I've seen in any other english language textbook. It's also fun to read.

It's Over
Well, after 6 years of work, I have decided to cease updating the History of Home Video Games Homepage. It's been a blast, let me tell you! I'm doing this as a result of my own realizations. Yes, I still have fond memories of videogames, both old, and some not so old as a result of this page. Still, I have come to the realization that I have other interests, now. This page was a wonderful diversion during my college years, and has been a source of both good and bad experiences. I also want to thank the supporters of this page over the years. After all these years, you still frequent my page on a daily basis. Oh, sure, it's easy to say these types of things, but really. If not for you, I wouldn't have been mentioned in Internet Underground, or the biggies like Yahoo! Internet Life and Wired. It's truly been a blessing, and I thank you. Finally, it's important to mention that this site will remain on the Internet, parked, for people to enjoy. It's enough of an archive that really doesn't need much maintenance, as proven by my lack of updates over the past, say, three years or so. You'll still be able to access the archives, although the search pages won't exist any longer. Perhaps someone will index the site and make it searchable, I don't know. The manuals, ROMs, labels, overlays, and screenshots will all remain here for as long as people access them. Greg Chance gchance@videogames.org

I am still in the process of learning solitons from this book, hence it is not very easy for me to offer an opinion of the merits of the book. But I assume that there is a whole batch of copies out there with awful printing quality between pages 117 and 147. The ink from the one side of each page has penetrated almost all the way to the other side making the reading very tedious. I returned my first copy, only to have it replaced with one having exactly the same problem

This is the only textbook that I know that introduces and explains the Hilbert-Riemann problem in a pedagogical way. If anyone knows of any other such book, please tell us. It also deals in a very introductory way with all sort of really nice topics that one cannot find discussed (at a really introductory level) in any similar book: the Painleve property, the classification of singularities, asymptotic expansions, etc, etc. All very powerful applied mathematics.
