Professor David Crighton, head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics (DAMTP) at Cambridge University, and master of Jesus College, who has died of cancer aged 57, was for the last decade the undisputed leader of the applied mathematics community in Britain. He was a major figure in the theory of aeroacoustics (aircraft and engine noise and how to control it), linear and nonlinear waves, and structural vibrations; he pioneered research council initiatives for the funding of research in applied nonlinear mathematics; he was instrumental in bringing together all the mathematical organisations in the country so that they could speak with one voice; he initiated a campaign with mathematical educationalists to improve the image of mathematics in schools (the highlight was the "Pop Maths Roadshow"); and he led his department and college with immense energy and vision.

LMS - IMA David Crighton Medal 2003
The David Crighton Medal for 2003 for services to Mathematics and to the mathematics community is awarded to Professor John Ball, F.R.S., Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy in the University of Oxford. John Ball is an outstanding mathematician of international standing. At the same time he has exerted himself both nationally and internationally for the good of Mathematics and its community. In particular, his activity internationally has done much to raise the profile of UK Mathematics, especially of Applied Mathematics. He has an exceptional record of getting things done and making things happen - in this he demonstrates the qualities of David Crighton himself. Nationally, he was very effective in pressing for and establishing an Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Scotland, and was one of the founders of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences, which was set up in Edinburgh more than 10 years ago. Over the years it has been, and remains, an important national asset and one whose programmes are complementary to those of the Isaac Newton Institute. John Ball was President of the London Mathematical Society from 1996-1998, and led the Society's moves throughout that period to increase its activity and influence in its promotion of mathematics and its links with other bodies.

He was head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge for nine years and master of Jesus College, Cambridge for three years. Crighton was born on 15 November 1942 in Llandudno, North Wales, to which his parents had been evacuated in World War II to avoid German bombing. Christened David (but not Lloyd!) George, and claiming no Welsh ancestry, he captained his school at rugby and won a mathematics scholarship to Cambridge. He graduated as a top student in 1964. In his first position, as a lecturer at Woolwich Polytechnic, Crighton taught mathematics to mature students in night school, where, he claimed, he mastered the elements of crowd control. But, having reached the top of that career path by the age of 24, he switched his sights to research. In 1967, he joined my group in the mathematics department of Imperial College as a research assistant.
