The inspirations for his research he found mostly in the rich well of his own original mind. His intuition, the problems he set himself, and the solutions that he found, all exhibit something extraordinarily ingenious, something original in an uncontrived way. He worked without hurrying, quietly on his own. His work remained almost locked away until everything had been put into its proper place. Without rushing, without pomposity and without arrogance, he waited until the fruits of his mind matured. Only after such a wait did he publish his perfected works... In 1837 he published Lehrbuch der Statik which gives a geometric treatment of statics. It led to the study of systems of lines in space. There was once a king with five sons. In his will he stated that on his death his kingdom should be divided by his sons into five regions in such a way that each region should have a common boundary with the other four. Can the terms of the will be satisfied? Back to front page

Stern's paper was not hard to find. Moritz Abraham Stern (my earlier spelling Moriz was erroneous) was a prominent figure in the mathematical world of his day, a colleague of Carl Friedrich Gauss who succeeded Gauss as Ordinary Professor of Mathematics at the University of Göttingen. According to Peter Pulzer, Stern was "the first Jew to be appointed to a full professorship at a German university without first converting to Christianity." Stern's paper appeared in the , also known as Crelle's Journal , after its first editor, August Leopold Crelle. When the journal was founded in 1826, its title reflected the growing division in mathematics between

    Encyclopedia : Niels Henrik Abel
Niels Henrik Abel August 5 6 April Norwegian mathematician, was born at Finnoey. In 1815 he entered the cathedral school at Christiania (as Oslo was then called), and three years later he gave proof of his mathematical genius by his brilliant solutions of the original problems proposed by Bernt Holmboe. About this time, his father, a poor Protestant minister, died, and the family was left in straitened circumstances; but a small pension from the state allowed Abel to enter Christiania University in 1821.
His first notable work was a proof of the impossibility of solving the quintic equation by radicals (see Abel-Ruffini theorem .) This investigation was first published in 1824 in abstruse and difficult form, and afterwards (1826) more elaborately in the first volume of Crelle's Journal. Further state aid enabled him to visit Germany and France in 1825, and having visited the astronomer
