August Leopold Crelle
road-building and railway engineer,
government surveyor and member of the academy of sciences.
The railway Berlin-Potsdam was designed by him.
It starts its services in 1838 as the first railway in Prussia.

The photograph of the plaque is from June 2003. Moreover a street nearby is named after him. It's some kind of tradition, that streets-signs for streets, which are named after some individuals, also provide some details (cf. on the left above). Here, as well as on the memorial stone in Eichwerder , A. L. Crelle is also identified as a mathematician. In 1988 the Deutsche Bundespost issued a stamp related to the occasion of the 150 anniversary of starting the rail services mentioned on the plaque above. Back to the root Created by W. 10.1. Abel, Niels (1802-1829)
IRA Niels Abel was one of the innovators in the field of elliptic functions, discoverer of Abelian functions and one of the leaders in the use of rigor in mathematics. His work was so revolutionary that one mathematician stated: "He has left mathematicians something to keep them busy for five hundred years." However, his life did not mirror his mathematical success and his story is one of the most tragic in the sciences. Abel's first main contribution to mathematics came before entering college. For hundreds of years, mathematicians had searched in vain to discover the general solution for the quintic equation a x + b x + c x + d x + e x + f = . Abel developed what he thought was the answer. Holmboe and Hansteen knew there was no one in Norway with the ability to understand if the answer was correct, so they sent the paper to the mathematician Ferdinand Degen in Denmark. Before receiving an answer, Abel discovered a mistake in his figures and questioned if there was an answer. Taking the tract that there was not, he eventually proved that an algebraic solution to the quintic equation was impossible. More important, however, Degen suggested that Abel take up the subject of elliptic integrals, which would become the focus of his work and the source of his fame. Before entering the University of Oslo in 1821, Abel's father died, leaving his son to support his mother and six siblings. Unable to meet his financial needs, he relied on grants from the university, gifts from his math professors and tutoring positions to keep his family afloat. However, his mathematics flourished. After fulfilling the requirements for graduation in one year, he was left on his own to study. In 1823, he published his first important paper on definite integrals, which included the first ever solutions of an integral equation. He also produced another valuable work on the integration of functions. Both of these works would have brought him instant renown and a professorship if anyone would have read them. Unfortunately, the works were written in Norwegian while the leading mathematicians of Europe wrote in French and German. The papers were ignored.

The great journey abroad
Berlin, Heinrich Hintze, 1829 In Berlin he met the mathematically interested engineer, August Leopold Crelle (1780-1855), who found the courage after his meeting with Abel to pursue a goal that he had long wanted to achieve, namely to publish a mathematical journal in Berlin that could compete with the well-established journals in France. By the beginning of 1826, the first issue of Abel remained in Berlin for four months, and he had an inspiring time there together with Crelle and his circle of mathematicians. August Leopold Crelle The first work that Abel published in was an expanded version of the proof that the general fifth degree equation was not solvable by the extraction of roots. With acuity and virtuosity, he showed that a possible solution would have to possess properties that no radical can have. Many special equations of a higher degree than the fifth have solutions, and in his ongoing work on equation theory, Abel went a long way toward finding acceptable solutions to these equations. The first year of Abel was accompanied on his travels by other young Norwegian scientists, most of whom were studying mineralogy and geology. For these young scientists, the most interesting study areas were in the south of Germany, in Austria, in Switzerland and in the north of Italy. Abel, who complained in many of his letters of how melancholy he could become when he was alone, followed his friends southward in Europe. He did not get to Paris until July 1826, ten months after he had left Christiania. He reported, "At last, I have arrived at the focal point of all of my mathematical hopes," and he explained the long detour as follows, "My desire to see some of Europe was great, and should we confine our travels solely to the study of the strictly scientific?"
