John Patch
Propeller of Ships 1781-1861 In 1858 a petition signed by more than 100 prominent citizens of Yarmouth was submitted to the Nova Scotia Legislature asking that a pension be granted John Patch who “conceives he has rendered essential service to the world at large.” The “essential service” that was referred to was the invention of the screw propeller, recognized by then as one of the major inventions of the nineteenth century for steamships of all description. As further evidence that Patch was the inventor, the petition enclosed a declaration from the Butler brothers of Yarmouth who wrote, “We assisted him in making the machinery for the first trial, which took place in 1833. We accompanied him in a small boat to which the propeller was attached and crossed the harbour several times.” The reason for the petition was that John Patch was now a lame, sick, 77-year-old living in a Yarmouth poorhouse. Patch was born in 1781 — the same year his sea captain father died in a shipwreck off Seal Island — but little is known of his early years in Nova Scotia. It is believed he worked as a fisherman and sailor for many years before getting the idea for a screw propeller while watching a small boat being sculled by a single oar moved in a particular pattern over its stern. According to a half brother writing in the Yarmouth Herald in 1875, Patch had been considering a screw propeller for almost 30 years, but scientific gentlemen to whom he showed his plan “laughed at him, telling him it was just as impractical as perpetual motion.”

Read this first about our reviews

Test Engineer John Laidlaw built our test apparatus. The cranks on your bike are the biggest things you turn to make it go forward (besides the wheels). They translate force to your drivetrain. In the past three years a significant number of new designs and manufacturers have emerged in crank production. With this influx of newer names and models and materials is the obvious question: How good are they, how do they compare?
The apparatus was designed to simulate "real world" pedal forces and measure crank flex.

I'd be curious to see what such a thing looks like. The main problem I see
with variable crank length, aside from probable lack of strength, is the
fact that there will probably be some "extra" crank sticking out when you
have your pedal at a short setting. This extra part would probably be very
    annoying to pedal around.

I'll have to differ with my MUni riding partner here. He seems to think that
it's impossible to pedal over 100 rpm on a unicycle. On the trails, maybe.
On level ground, it's easy. Anyway, pedaling slow on a unicycle, on level
ground, is not bad for you knees like pedaling too slow on a bicycle, while
trying to go fast, is. On level ground, a unicycle doesn't require much
strain to keep moving. On a bike, the pressure of the wind resistance
combined with a low cadence puts a greater strain on the knees.
Though it puts more strain on your knees than casual bicycling, I don't
agree that unicycling is bad for your knees. Running/jogging is much worse, as is any kind of impact activity. On a unicycle your feet are going around

I've been away for a couple of weeks. I like the reference you make to the runners knee and the link to the foot peddle to drive the grind stone. Sounds a bit like a bicycle crank? I'll have to think about that. I personally don't think it's necessary to pose the idea of a double-lointed crank-shaft but who knows? As for the flail, and its link to the scholar - I suspect that for flail you can read whip, and for the scholar read schoolboy. And remember there are things called whipping-tops. maybe there is some way that the internal mechanism resembles whips, tops and their action. If the flail would rather be with the thresher than the scholar perhaps it means the the whip mosty remains in the raised position and only descends on the scholar for a brief time. Just musing folks :-) John Collins

Danielle is in her twenties. She has lived on the Northern Cheyenne reservation all her life. She describes the In's and mostly the Out's of the life of 6 years of meth use.
    The Addiction Starts
"I didn't really wanna get into crank because I didn't know what it was about."
Danielle was smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol before she tried crank. She ran into an old friend of hers who was a dealer. "He introduced me to crank." He wanted Danielle to start selling weed for him. "So I started selling weed, and knowing that he had crank too. I didn't really wanna get into it because I didn't know what it was about." One night Danielle was drunk to the point that she was sick. Her dealer asked her if she wanted a line of crank "So I said, 'Yeah, why not?' It sobered me up because he gave me such a big line I wasn't used to it. It was about half a quarter." She liked the fact that it seemed to sober her up. "So I asked him if I could get some from him." He agreed to give her some, since she was selling weed for him. "I was kinda scared of it myself. It only been so many times since I first tried it." "I kinda wanted to see what it was about, 'cause everyone would talk about it. I was young then, how it sobered you up that was my main thing 'cause I liked to drink. Sometimes I'd get too drunk for myself. I'd hate that feeling so that line would sober me up. After I'd have that line I'd go to my drinking again."

    The Crank Rainier Project
By Peter Rieke I woke with a start to the sound of voices and the clank of mountaineering gear. It was the crew coming up from the low camp. "Wreatha, get up." I said, prodding my wife, "We've over slept. What time is it?" I found my headlamp and saw that it was not even 2:30 am - they weren't supposed to be here for another hour. "Come on you slackers" Dave Blanchard yelled shaking our tent "We've got a mountain to climb!" "We're up, we're up!" I replied testily and started the familiar morning routine chew a dry cookie, pull on some polypropylene underwear, and take a swig of water. The water wasn't frozen, hardly even cold. I checked the cook pot sitting on the snow in the tent foyer, not frozen either. Bad news! The snow was going to be soft, mushy, not good for Snow Pod traction. Outside the boys organized gear, flaked ropes and uncovered the Snow Pod. "You ready Peter?" "Yeah" I replied and scooted out the tent threw my legs over the edge and grabbed hold of Ira's shoulders. "One, Two, Three" and we're in the Snow Pod. I snap on the safety or belay lines and we are ready to go. My belayers and I call to each other, "Belay on!" "Cranking!" "Crank-On", and we start up the Hogsback ridge. It is 700 vertical feet of 45-degree slope leading to the 11,200' summit of Mt. Hood. In the quiet of a windless, star-lit night, the mountain seems like an old friend. It is a beautiful morning on the summit - sunny and calm. I've been here a dozen times before. It should be old hat but today I can barely talk, a few tears stream down my cheeks unnoticed by others. I'm not the only one who thinks it is a special day. It has been a long 4-year journey since the "climbing accident". A journey I could not do alone, a journey so many of my friends willingly signed up for knowing it would be a long haul. We spent thousand of hours building the pod building three separate prototypes actually. Hundreds of hours training in the gym, on my racing chair, and cranking the pod down endless snowmobile tracks.

    The 1970s: 1974 Los Angeles Dodgers 102-60 (.630), 1st place (by 4 games), lost World Series to A's 4-1, 4.93 R/G, 3.46 RA/G (Avg 4.15)
The Dodger infield of Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Ron Cey became household names in 1974, but for me at least, the team was long identified with the squad that lost consecutive World Serieses to the Yankees Tommy Lasorda's team, with Reggie Smith and Dusty Baker in the outfield. But the 1974 team was the best Dodger team in the franchise's tenure in Los Angeles, and would probably be remembered as such if they hadn't lost to the Mustache Gang in the World Series.
After a two-year collapse following the 1966 retirement of Sandy Koufax, the Dodgers of the late 60s and early 70s were mostly a good team; although perennially stuck behind the Big Red Machine, they finished second five times and third once between 1970 and 1976. The Dodgers tried a lot of different things for example, importing veteran sluggers Dick Allen and Frank Robinson. But at the core was the rebuilding of the infield. Garvey broke in as a third baseman, playing semiregularly after 1971, and moved to first base to make room for Cey (after Wes Parker's sudden retirement in 1972) in 1973. Russell replaced Maury Wills at short in 1972. In 1974, Garvey became an everyday fixture at first, moving Bill Buckner to the outfield and relegating Manny Mota to pinch hitting duties. The 1973 team was already a good one, winning 95 games. Garvey began a series of nearly identical productive seasons in 1974 .312 average, 21 HR, 111 RBI, 200 hits. He was named the NL MVP.

My name is John Apperson, I was born in Missouri in the late 1950s and lived on a farm until I was five years old. The house I lived in as a child was built in 1830. Back in those days farms were low on Bell Telephones priority list, so we had a crank telephone. The other farms in the area were all wired together as a large party line. If you wanted to call a neighbor you might crank long-short-long. Moving to Southern California in early 1960's was like moving into the future 30 years. One day we were driving on dirt roads and talking on crank telephones and the next we were driving on freeways and going to Disneyland where we could talk on experimental video phones. Maybe these time warping experiences prepared me for other events in my life. In junior high school I took "high tech" classes like "Print Shop" (Yes we got to set type by hand). When I was in high school I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. It wasn't until I was in college and needed a job to support my young family that I finally found my career. A friend of mine called me and told me about a man who was training people to do "computer drafting". They weren't even teaching that at the university so I called the man and didn't give him a chance to say no. In November of 1981 my friends and I waited in a dark parking lot in Pasadena California. Most of us had never met this man who claimed to be starting a CAD business. But he asked us to meet him at a company called Metrix at 11pm for CAD training so there we were. When he drove into the parking lot in an old Gremlin my heart sank. I needed a real job and this didn't look like a successful businessman.
