After war work on ballistics he was a mathematical physicist at Courtaulds Fundamental Research Laboratory from 1945 to 1957 and professor of mathematics at Brunel University (initially Brunel College in Acton) from 1957 to 1981. His main work was on the numerical solution of partial differential equations and, in particular, the solution of heat-conduction problems. In the 1940s such calculations were carried out on simple mechanical desk machines. Crank is quoted as saying that to "burn a piece of wood" numerically then could take a week. One of my favorites, a collaboration between Jonathan Lethem and Carter Scholz, has the perfect premise: Franz Kafka wrote the screenplay for the movie that eventually became It's a Wonderful Life . Back in 1997 when I first started getting into the Internet, I went to mp3.com and noticed they didn't have a "comedy" section on their site, so I emailed them asking them to add on, since I had some comedy mp3s I wanted to upload. They emailed me back and promptly added the comedy section to their site. I uploaded all the files, and was the first person to add anything to the comedy section of mp3.com! The amount of downloads per day for my songs was staggering - Some of these were on the mp3.com Top 10 list for awhile for the most downloaded mp3s.
