This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

Roger Cotes was a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge in 1707. At the age of 26 he became the first Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy. At Cambridge he became friends with William Whiston From 1709 until 1713 much of Cotes's time was taken up editing the second edition of Newton 's Principia . He did not simply proof-read the work, rather he conscientiously studied the work gently but persistently arguing points with Newton . At the beginning of the correspondence between the two the tone is very friendly, however, toward the end of the task, there are signs that they are cooling towards one another. Cotes only published one paper in his lifetime, namely Logometria . Cotes was particularly pleased with his rectification of the logarithmic curve as he makes clear in a letter to his friend William Jones in 1712. In particular his work on logarithms led him to study the curve

ROGER COTES Roger Cotes was born near Leicester on July 10, 1682, and died at Cambridge on June 5, 1716. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, of which society he was a fellow, and in 1706 was elected to the newly-created Plumian chair of astronomy in the university of Cambridge. From 1709 to 1713 his time was mainly occupied in editing the second edition of the Principia . The remark of Newton that if only Cotes had lived ``we might have known something'' indicates the opinion of his abilities held by most of his contemporaries. Cotes's writings were collected and published in 1722 under the titles Harmonia Mensurarum and Opera Miscellanea . His lectures on hydrostatics were published in 1738. A large part of the Harmonia Mensurarum is given up to the decomposition and integration of rational algebraical expressions. That part which deals with the theory of partial fractions was left unfinished, but was completed by Demoivre. Cotes's theorem in trigonometry, which depends on forming the quadratic factors of - 1, is well known. The proposition that ``if from a fixed point

British Contemporaries of Newton, Taylor, Maclaurin and Simpson
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. David Gregory Halley Ditton Cotes ... Stewart It was almost a matter of course that the English should at first have adopted the notation of Newton in the infinitesimal calculus in preference to that of Leibnitz and consequently the English school would in any case have developed on somewhat different lines to that on the continent, where a knowledge of the infinitesimal calculus was derived solely from Leibnitz and the Bernoullis. But this separation into two distinct schools became very marked owing to the action of Leibnitz and John Bernoulli, which was naturally resented by Newton's friends; and so for forty or fifty years, to the disadvantage of both sides, the quarrel raged. The leading members of the English school were Cotes Demoivre Ditton David Gregory Halley Maclaurin Simpson , and Taylor . I may, however, again remind my readers that as we approach modern times the number of capable mathematicians in Britain, France, Germany and Italy becomes very considerable, but that in a popular sketch like this book it is only the leading men whom I propose to mention. To David Gregory, Halley and Ditton I need devote but few words.

Roger Cotes (1682–1716) was the first Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy, at Trinity College, Cambridge. One of the most distinguished, and certainly one of the most ardent, of the early Newtonians he did important work in mathematics and astronomy and edited the second edition of Newton’s Principia. Cotes died young and published only one paper, the Logometria, during his lifetime; a translation of this paper is given in the Appendix. Most of Cotes’s papers were published posthumously in Latin in Harmonia Mensurarum in 1722. Dr Gowing discusses Cotes’ work in some detail but has written the work in such a way that the more technical aspects of the mathematics can be omitted at first reading whilst still giving a clear idea of Cotes’ achievement. Cotes’ work was significant but his full potential was unrealised; in Newton’s reputed words: ‘If he had lived, we might have known something.’
