Hermann entered the Cloister School at Reichenau in September 1020. He became a monk at the Benedictine Monastery at Reichenau in 1043, becoming Abbot of the Monastery. Hermann is called 'the Lame' or 'Contractus' for very good reason. He was extremely disabled, having only limited movement and limited ability to speak. Despite these disabilities he was a key figure in the transmission of Arabic mathematics, astronomy and scientific instruments from Arabic sources into central Europe. In other words he published in Latin much scientific work which before this time had been only available in Arabic. One would expect, from this description, that he would be an Arabic speaker but it is thought almost certain that he could not read Arabic. Hermann introduced three important instruments into central Europe, knowledge of which came from Arabic Spain. He introduced the astrolabe, a portable sundial and a quadrant with a cursor.

KULESHA: In particular, I remember being deeply impacted by a movie called Il conformista , by Bernardo Bertolucci. The way he intercuts them, they gradually switch places, so when they meet, that becomes the present, and from that moment we move into the future. I remember being so struck by that. It occurred to me that structural control in music has a lot to do with the flow of time and multiple perspectives, and I became very intrigued by simultaneity, time compression, and intercutting. All of those things led naturally toward composers like Ives, and Carter, and I became interested in trying to apply those things to some of my own music.

Kiadta Jaffé, Monumenta Germaniae Historica Scriptores, XVII. és XXIV. köt. 2 H. vonFritzlar, középkor német misztikus iró, olvasott és tapasztalt kritikus, 1343-49 közt irta a Szentek életét (Der Heiligen Leben, kiadta Pfeiffer, Dutsche Mystiker I. 1845), melynek anyagát (szûz Máriának és vagy 70 szentnek életét) korabeli misztikus munkákból és prédikációkból hordta össze, de vonzó elõadásban dolgozta föl. 3. H. von Reichenau (Hermannus contractus), német szerzetes és kiváló tudós, szül. gróf Velingen családból 1013 jul. 18. Mindkét lábára béna volt és segítség nélkül mozogni sem tudott, szellemi tehetésgei és vas szorgalma korának legtudósbb férfiává tették. 30 éves korában eltetta a fogadalmat a reichenaui kolostorban. Megh. 1054 szept. 28. Chronicon ab urbe condita ad annum 1054. c. mûve, mely Kr. születésétõl H. haláláig 1054. terjed Felemlítendõk még De octo vitis principalibus; több egyházi himnus, ezek közt: Salve Regina, Alma Redemptoris és Veni Sancte Spiritus, melyeket neki tulajdonítanak. 4.
