Pioneer Reade, John Collingwood John Collingwood Reade belonged to a new breed of newscaster. He was a journalist who had the experience to personalize, background and analyze the news. He was a broadcast commentator. He was British and immensely proud of it. The Collingwood in his name came from a relationship on his mother's side to Admiral Collingwood who was second in command to Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. John traveled in Europe, South America and the United States before the Second World War. In 1936 he covered for CBS the abdication of King Edward VIII as King of England to marry Wallis Simpson. His Canadian radio career began in 1939 with newscasts for CFRB Toronto from a studio at The Globe and Mail. During the war he broadcast on CFRB and wrote a war column for The Globe. Long-time CFRB employee Bill Baker noted in The Birth of Radio in Canada by Bill McNeil and Morris Wolfe: "We always had star personalities at CFRBÂ…and during the war there was an announcer called John Collingwood Reade, who was English. When news from the front seemed to indicate that Britain was finished, John would come on with his Churchillian voice and would say: 'We're going to come through.' Everyone could go to bed with an easy mind because we believed him." In 1941, John went briefly to Britain as a war correspondent for CFRB and The Globe. From Canada, he contributed to the BBC's overseas broadcasts, Britain Speaks. About that time, he also wrote a booklet

"[Murrow] said it was not the purpose of radio to take the story to the listener, but to bring the listener to the story"
The Sound of WWII
May 16, 2003
BOB GARFIELD: Gulf War Two was the first war that viewers had the ability to watch in real time, but it wasn't the first in which reporters offered play by play narration from the battlefield. Years from now we'll recall images of this war through the green stain of night vision goggles, just as people who came of age in the 1940s remember World War II as a series of vignettes shrouded in a veil of radio static, delivered by Edward R. Murrow. Now highlights from Murrow's reporting and that of his so-called "Murrow's Boys" have been compiled on a CD that accompanies a new book called World War II On the Air. Mark Bernstein is one of the book's two authors, and he joins me now. Mark, welcome to the show.
MARK BERNSTEIN: Oh, pleased to be here.

Despite its general title, half of this article is devoted to Plough Monday plays. Brief descriptions are given of versions from Clayworth, Notts., and Blidworth, Notts., and there is an unlocated photograph of a team of actors. No text is quoted however. The Clayworth play had the characters; Soldier, Old Eezum Squeezum, Clown and Doctor, although sometimes King George or Saint George appeared instead of Soldier, and Beelzebub replaced Eezum Squeezum. The Blidworth "Plough-Bullocking" play had; King George, Doctor and a Pressgang, and is described as being extant. It was collected by Rev. Edward Dunnicliff of Ollerton. Cecil Sharp's theories on the dualistic nature of the play, and their supposed pagan origins are reiterated. The rest of the article discusses the Eakring Ball Game played on Easter Tuesdays, and Maypoles at Wellow, Edwinstowe, Linby, Farnsfield, Stapleford and Nottingham. Index Terms: Locations: Blidworth, Notts. (SK5855); Clayworth, Notts. (SK7288); Eakring, Notts. (SK6762); Wellow, Notts. (SK6766); Edwinstowe, Notts. (SK6266); Linby, Notts. Captain Collingwood writes to Commodore Nelson.....
Captain Cuthbert Collingwood
Painted by Henry Howard Excellent, February 15 1797 My Dear Good Friend, First let me congratulate you on the success of yesterday, - on the brilliancy it attached to the British Navy, and the humility it must cause to its enemies, - and then let me congratulate my dear commodore on the distinguished part which he ever takes when the honour and interests of his country are at stake. It added very much to the satisfaction which I felt in thumping the Spaniards, that I released you a little. The highest rewards are due to you and Culloden: you formed the plan of attack, - we were only accessories to the Don's ruin; for, had they got on the other tack, they would have been sooner joined, and the business would have been less complete. We have come off pretty well considering: eleven killed, and twelve wounded. You say the 4-decker going off this morning to Cadiz, - she should have come to Lagos to make the thing better, but we could not brace our yards up to get nearer. O beg my compliments to Captain Martin: I think he was at Jamaica when we were. Cuthbert Collingwood, Capt

Commander Edward Berry
Sir Edward Berry
Rear Admiral Painted by John Singleton Copley Edward Berry was the son on a London merchant, born in 1768. Berry's father had died at an early age leaving a widow, 5 daughters and 2 sons with very little money. Edward Berry was educated by an uncle in Norwich and entered the Navy as a Midshipman in Burford through the patronage of Lord Mulgrave. He was Signal Midshipman in Duke when she attacked St. Pierre in Martinique - Berry was standing on the poop deck 'when a shot across him deprived him of all sense and feeling so that he was carried down as dead and intense was the surprise of those around him when he recovered the shock'. Agamemnon At St. Vincent, Berry, by now a Commander, was a passenger abpard Captain . When rejoining his flagship from Minerve on 13th February, Nelson was extremely pleased to find Berry aboard. In the subsequent battle, Berry had no particular duty on board. However, when Nelson laid Captain alongside the San Nicolas and gave the order for boarders, Berry was the first man over the side. With the help of soldiers from the 69th Regiment he jumped across to the San Nicolas . By the time Nelson arrived on board, Berry and the soldiers had taken possession of the poop deck and Berry was hauling down the Spanish flag. As soon as the surrender of the
