    Introduction
    Intro
    The Campaign
The campaign that led to Crecy and the siege of Calais marked a change in Edward III's policy. Prior to this point, he had tried to use alliances against the French, and had spent a great deal of money gaining allies in Flanders and the Empire. This policy had failed to produce any real results, and had caused a financial crisis in England that briefly threatened a return to the confusion of Edward II's reign. Instead of relying on allies, Edward mounted this campaign with an English and Welsh army, with a large contingent of archers. The army contained the retinues of aristocratic captains, as well as a sizable number of county levies. The main exception to the call to arms were the northern nobles, who were left in place to defend against any Scottish attack, a policy that provided its worth against the Scottish invasion that was defeated at Nevilles Cross (17 October) Edward's army landed at La Hogue on 22 July, and spent the next month marching through Normandy, although the only major gain was the capture of Caen (26 July). Philip of France had mobilized the entire fighting strength of France, and while his army was gathering at Paris, he destroyed all of the bridges over the Seine, hoping to keep Edward pinned down in Normandy. Edward decided to gamble on a march towards Flanders, which would take him past Paris and force him to cross the Seine and the Somme. Both rivers were formidable obstacles. Edward was able to repair one of the bridges over the Seine, but the Somme proved a greater obstacle, with the bridges destroyed and the fords guarded. Luckly for Edward, he was told of a tidal ford, and was able to beat off the troops that guarded it, and cross over, with Philip's troops snapping at his heels (24 August). The tide then turned, and the French were unable to chase his army. Campaign

World War II on the Air: Edward R. Murrow and the Broadcasts That Riveted a Nation > Customer Review #1: Great history

I read the Rise and Fall on the 3rd Reich in high school, and I had always thought of Wm Shirer as a historian - I had no idea that he was a reporter during the war, and had a unique seat and understanding watching the Nazi drama unfold. Great book. You can really appreciate the difficulty of getting a live broadcast from Europe done in 1938, and how hard Murrow and company worked at it. There was no "press freedom" then, and the deference the press is shown today didnt exist then. They were a courageous bunch, Morrows boys. And look at the roster! Murrow and Shirer, Eric Sevareid, Howard K. Smith, Charles Collingwood, and back in New York, William Paley was calling the shots and rooting Murrow on. What a collection of talent. Amazing.
