Paradigm , No. 16 (May, 1995) John Denniss Chessins,
Chignal Smealey,
Chelmsford,
Essex CM1 4TN In this article two particular features of the presentation of multiplication tables (or, more accurately, the multiplication table, as it was always referred to) in textbooks are considered namely, the range of numbers to be included in the table and the organisation of the results on the page. The texts in question are all in English and cover the period from around 1300 (when what is thought to be the earliest arithmetical manuscript in English was written) to 1900, after which separate textbooks tended to be written for the Primary and Secondary schools, the latter not usually including tables at all and the former often giving results in partial form at different stages. (However, there was, and still is, considerable variation.) In all some 45 texts are considered. Dates in the body of this text refer to year of original publication. commutative principle (e.g. 3 x 4 = 4 x 3) and thus require children to learn nearly twice as many results as they need. It is therefore startling, perhaps, to find this principle recognised in the very earliest text The Crafte of Nombrynge (c. 1300):

Ribbed for Spot's Pleasure
In Washington, the Folger Shakespeare Library has the coffee table book prototype on display. The book, recently restored and some 400 years old, contains an illustrated history of the world and is reported to have been "flipped over by bored visitors in 16th century living rooms." Don Paterson walked away with the £10,000 T.S. Eliot Prize, but he says it's tough living being a poet . It takes Paterson a year to come up with a whole poem. While declaring poetry an "amateur pursuit," Paterson's still shocked that poetry is as much work as any other form of writing. Today's obscenity racket : Passion Panties, a Tupperware-style sex toy company, has had one of its representatives arrested in Texas. The representative had even joined the local Chambers of Commerce. But that didn't stop authorities from citing a state law prohibiting the sale of obscene devices, which are legally defined as items "designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs." What's interesting is that, like the "entertainment purposes" rap in Alabama, commerce is not addressed. So I'm sensing a common theme here. You can sell, sell, sell just about anything under the sun. But heaven forbid that you design, market, or entertain. The Texas law is so nebulous that one can make the case that maxi-pads or ribbed rubbers are "obscene items" by way of stimulating gentials. But since the law stipulates "human genital organs," presumably a vibrator deisgned and marketed for cocker spaniels is peachy keen, right?

Rare Math Books at the University of Michigan
The University of Michigan Library started with 3707 volumes (purchased for $5000), including Audubon's "The Birds of America" (1827-38). It offered little mathematics and grew slowly. A major improvement came in 1881 when a complete run of Crelle's Journal was donated. Two faculty made important contributions to the mathematics collection. Alexander Ziwet, who was on the faculty from 1898 to 1925, worked to improve the library and contributed a large collection of his own books. Louis C. Karpinski, on the faculty from 1904 to 1948, gathered many rare volumes for the mathematics collection. Another important influence occurred in 1964 when Mathematical Reviews moved to Ann Arbor. Today the mathematics collection at the University of Michigan is one of the best in the world. The collection of rare mathematics books is outstanding. The titles listed below in chronological order were selected by V. Frederick Rickey, of Bowling Green State University, to show to a history of mathematics course taught at Michigan State University by Dan Chazan on March 11, 1996. We would like to thank Peggy Daub, Head of Special Collections and curator of the mathematics collection at the library for her assistance. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Bluffs/9161/Cockers.html
There is an Indian legend which says when a human dies
there is a bridge they must cross to enter into heaven.
At the head of that bridge waits every animal that human
encountered during their lifetime. The animals,
based upon what they know of this person,
decide which humans may cross the bridge...
and which are turned away... COCKERS had for quite a few years been dedicated to the rescue of cocker spaniels...
whether American or English, young or old,
special needs or healthy. During this period, many more cocker spaniel rescue groups have sprung up all over the United States and Canada. Because the rescue of young, healthy, "normal" cockers is pretty well covered by these other groups, COCKERS has decided to dedicate it's efforts more towards the senior, disabled, handicapped or ill cocker spaniels that are not considered to be adoptable by shelters, owners and even some other rescue groups. COCKERS has essentially become a "last sanctuary" for these cockers and a forever home. UPDATE We have very recently had to spend almost $800 for three of our cockergirls for vet expenses. Lucy and Sadie had to be sent to Rainbow Bridge due to lymphoma and renal failure. Shawa has a very bad herniated disc and bad arthritis. We could really use some help with these costs as they were unexpected. Please see Lucy, Sadie and Shawa on the sponsorship page.
