William K. Clifford was an English mathematician and philosopher who did not end up writing much, but nevertheless became famous for his argument that beliefs are not simply private acts. They are, instead, public acts and therefore have moral consequences. In his essay "The Ethics of Belief" (1879), he expressed the controversial idea that: "It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything on insufficient evidence." http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/C/Clifford/1.htm
Clifford, William Kingdon
English mathematician and scientific philosopher who developed the theory of biquaternions and made advances in non-Euclidean geometry. Clifford parallels and Clifford surfaces are named after him.
Clifford was born in Exeter, Devon, and educated at Cambridge, where he spent his academic career until 1871, when he was appointed professor of applied mathematics at University College, London. From 1876 he lived in the Mediterranean region.
It was through a generalization of the quaternions (themselves a generalization of complex numbers) that Clifford derived his theory of biquaternions, associating them specifically with linear algebra. In this way representing motions in three-dimensional non-Euclidean space, and together with his suggestion in 1870 that matter itself was a kind of curvature of space, Clifford may be seen to have foreshadowed in some respects Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity.

Clifford, William (1845-1879)

English mathematician who was one of the few of his time to understand the implications of Riemann's geometry. He invented the Clifford algebras of which octonions and biquaternions are special cases. He published his ideas in On the Space-Theory of Matter (1870), as well as the book of children's tales The Little People, but died at the peak of his creativity.

Site Update
As you can see, I've redesigned the site again. The previous design was boring, so it had to go. This one isn't quite ready for prime time, but I'm tired of messing around with the busted scripts that ran the last one.

http://brindedcow.umd.edu/236/cliffordandjames.html
Notes on W.K. Clifford and William James W.K. Clifford's essay is called The Ethics of Belief , and for good reason. He wants to convince us that forming our beliefs in the right way is a matter of real ethical importance. Thus, he begins with an example where the co nnection between belief and ethical considerations seems very strong: the ship-owner knows that his ship might need to be overhauled. Before the ship leaves port, however, he talks himself out of his doubts. He reminds himself that the ship has sailed saf ely many times before. He reminds himself that he believes in Providence. And he persuades himself not to distrust the shipbuilders and contractors who have worked on the boat in the past. The ship sinks in mid-ocean and all aboard it die. Clifford insists: the ship-owner is morally responsible for the deaths of these people. And his failing is clear: he let his beliefs be guided by things other than the evidence. Further, Clifford insists, he would be just as guilty if the ship had never sunk. What makes actions wrong are not the results. What makes actions wrong is not a matter of results. He had no right to believe that the ship was safe; it was wrong of him to hold that belief, even if he is lucky enugh to have nothing go wrong as a result.
