William Clifford
Alias Mansell), divine, d. 30 April, 1670; he was the son of Henry Clifford, by his wife Elizabeth Thimelby, who as a widow joined the English Augustinian nuns at Louvain, and died, aged about seventy-seven, 3 September, 1642. Through humility Clifford never asserted his right to the Barony of Cumberland. After education and ordination at Douai, he came on the English mission. As vice-president, he helped the English College at Lisbon through difficult times, and became superior of Tournay College (Paris), assigned by Cardinal Richelieu to the English clergy. He evaded being made bishop in 1660, declined in 1670 the presidency of Douai, and closed his life in the Hopital des Incurables in Paris. Clifford's works are: "Christian Rules proposed to a vertuous Soule" (Paris, 1615), dedicated to Mrs Ursula Clifford; "The Spirituall Combat", translated by R.R. (Paris, 1656), dedicated to Abbot Montague; "Little Manual of Poore Man's Dayly Devotion" (2nd edition, Paris, 1670), often reprinted; "Observations upon Kings' Reigns since the Conquest" (MS.); "Collections concerning Chief Points of Controversy" (MS.) Little Manual, 5th ed., preface; Dodd, Church History, III, 297; Gillow, Bibl. Dict. Eng. Catholics, I, 514, s.v.; Idem, Lisbon College, 9 and 189; Cooper in Dict. Of Nat. This award-winning globe could help children become A+ geography students. The Explorer Globe II is jam-packed with hundreds of facts, trivia, and useful scholastic information about every aspect of the geographical world. It electronically verbalizes everything from area population, capitol city/country, state/province, large bodies of water, currencies, high points, distance, and more. Other remarkable features make the Explorer an even more useful reference tool. It has a world clock that, once set from your home area, will tell the time in every other part of the world. And any country can be selected to hear a sample its national music (yes, Tahiti does have a national anthem). The globe sits on a sturdy base, which features a dashboard full of interactive functions and an attached soft-tipped stylus. This stylus is the key instrument: use it to touch virtually any point on the surface of the globe to retrieve information. Diane Beall

William Clifford showed great promise at school where he won prizes in many different subjects. At age 15 he was sent to King's College, London where he excelled in mathematics and also in classics, English literature and (perhaps unexpectedly) in gymnastics. When he was 18 years old William entered Trinity College, Cambridge. He won not only prizes for mathematics but also a prize for a speech he delivered on Sir Walter Raleigh. He was second wrangler in his final examinations (in common with many other famous mathematicians who were second at Cambridge like Thomson and Maxwell ). He was elected to a Fellowship at Trinity in 1868. In 1870 he was part of an expedition to Italy to obtain scientific data from an eclipse. He had the unfortunate experience of being shipwrecked near Sicily, but he was fortunate to survive. In 1871 Clifford was appointed to the chair of Mathematics and Mechanics at University College London. In 1874 he was elected a Fellow of the

Blues ambassador: Clifford William Aungier 1941 - 2004
Much respected much missed: Cliff Aungier By Chris Groom Of all the musicians to emerge from the Croydon area in the early 60s, it is hard to imagine a more fervent ambassador for the blues than Cliff Aungier. His total enthusiasm for the music shone through every conversation, performance and recording. Born in West Croydon in April 1941, Cliff's future was mapped out for him by a television appearance from Big Bill Broonzy, one of the American blues artists who became his heroes. While working his apprenticeship at the CEGB power station on the Purley Way, he met Gerry Lockran who shared his passion for the guitar and the two became close friends and musical partners. Gerry introduced Cliff to Royd Rivers, forming a harmonica and guitar duo in the style of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and recording their debut LP for Decca in 1965, produced by Jimmy Page. In August 1965, Cliff and Gerry were responsible for opening the folk and blues club at the Half Moon in Putney Folksville' paved the way for many years of live music, as the Moon established itself as one of the premier venues in London.

William Kingdon Clifford May 4 March 3 ) was an English mathematician and philosopher He was born at Exeter , and educated at a private school there. He went on to King's College, London and Trinity College, Cambridge , where he was elected fellow in 1868, after being second wrangler in 1867 and second Smith's prizeman. In 1871 he was appointed professor of mathematics at University College, London , and in 1874 became a fellow of the Royal Society . He was also a member of the Metaphysical Society In he married Lucy , daughter of John Lane of Barbados . In 1876, however, he began to suffer ill-health, and after two voyages to the South, died during the third of pulmonary consumption at Madeira , leaving his widow with two daughters. His contemporaries considered him a man of extraordinary acuteness and originality, gifted with quickness of thought and speech, a lucid style, wit and poetic fancy, and a social warmth. To quote Professor Henry Smith, "Clifford was above all and before all a geometer." In this he was an innovator against the excessively analytic tendency of Cambridge mathematicians. In his theory of graphs , or geometrical representations of algebraic functions, there are valuable suggestions which have been worked out by others. He was much interested, too, in
