R.I.H.S. home page Clarke Family Collection Manuscripts Division Historical note: The Clarke family of Rhode Island came from England in approximately 1637. Several branches of the family settled in Rhode Island. Some of the more noteworthy Clarkes represented in this collection are: Dr. John Clarke, (1609-1676) who helped settle Rhode Island with Roger Williams; Ethan Clarke of the West Indies mercantile company Clarke and Hammond; Peleg and Audley Clarke, a father and son merchant team; and John H. Clarke, U.S. Senator (1847-1853). The best source for genealogy is George Austin Morrison, Jr.'s The "Clarke" Families of Rhode Island (NY: The Evening Post Job Printing House, 1902). Return to top Scope and content: The documents in the collection were gathered from miscellaneous accessions to make them more accessible and to preserve them. The collection spans from 1676 to 1914, but the bulk of the papers date from 1775 to 1815. The arrangement is alphabetical, but oversized material is in the last two boxes, and several volumes were not boxed. One of the more interesting documents in the collection is the diary of 20-year-old Celia Greene Clarke of East Greenwich, dated 1829. After the death of her mother, she seems to have taken an active role in managing the servants on her large family farm, and caring for her younger siblings.

He was an Anglican clergyman and was relatively well-connected, though never achieved great stature in the church. The Leibniz/Clarke correspondence is one of the richest early modern sources of discussion about the philosophical implications of Newton’s natural philosophy. It comprises an exchange of ten letters, or papers, which explore a range of issues with a striking clarity and depth. The exchange is best known for its discussion of absolute vs relative space, but many other fundamental questions in metaphysics are examined. There are treatments of the impact of Newton’s thought for religion, discussions of the nature of the void, the Principle of Sufficient Reason and the Identity of Indiscernibles. This first edition was prepared for publication by the divine Samuel Clarke (1675-1729) and quickly became immensely popular.

Science Articles Samuel Clarke Online Encyclopedia Samuel Clarke October 11 May 17 ) was an English philosopher The son of Edward Clarke, an alderman who represented the city of Norwich in parliament, was educated at the free school of Norwich and at Caius College, Cambridge . The philosophy of Rene Descartes was the reigning system at the university; Clarke, however, mastered the new system of Isaac Newton , and contributed greatly to its extension by publishing a Latin version of the Traité de physique of Jacques Rohault (1620-1675) with valuable notes, which he finished before he was twenty-two. The system of Rohault was founded entirely upon Cartesian principles, and was previously known only through the medium of a crude Latin version. Clarke's translation (1697) continued to be used as a text-book in the university till supplanted by the treatises of Newton, which it had been designed to introduce. Four editions were issued, the last and best being that of 1718. It was translated into English in 1723 by his brother Dr John Clarke, dean of Sarum. Clarke afterwards devoted himself to the study of Scripture in the original, and of the primitive Christian writers. Having taken holy orders, he became chaplain to John Moore, bishop of Norwich, who became his friend and patron. In 1699 he published two treatises:
