Alexis Clairaut : (1713-1765) Mathématicien français. Il fut reçu à l'Académie des sciences à 18 ans. En 1736, il fut envoyé avec Maupertuis en Laponie pour y déterminer la longueur d'un degré de méridien. Après son retour, il publia sa Théorie de la figure de la Terre (1743), qui contribua à faire accepter en France la théorie newtonienne de la gravitation. Auteur de travaux de mécanique céleste, il fit progresser la théorie des équations différentielles. Les équations différentielles de Clairaut sont de la forme : y = x.y' + f(y'), où f est une fonction dérivable, la solution générale est de la forme y = a.x + f(a), où a est une constante, il y a en outre une solution une solution singulière.
