George Chrystal 's father, William Chrystal, was first a grain merchant, later a landowner and farmer. His mother, Margaret Burr, was a daughter of James Burr of Mains of Glaik, Aberdeenshire. The family stayed at Mill of Kingoodie, and Chrystal received his early education at the parish school of Old Meldrum, two miles from his home. As a child he was bright intellectually but suffered from lameness, which he afterwards outgrew, but which prevented him from joining in physical games. The family moved to Aberdeen shortly before 1863, the year Chrystal entered Aberdeen Grammar School. In 1866 he was awarded the Williamson Scholarship as the best pupil in the third class and, in his fourth and final class in the Grammar school he won the Silver Medal. In the same year, 1867, he entered Aberdeen University. Welcome to TJ's! Susie Robertshaw, tutor coordinator on the right, with Nancy Braden ('01-'02 Holt stats tutor) in her bewitching costume, and Chrystal George (Spanish tutor), waiting for the TJ's Day (f'02) festivities in the Campus Center to begin Hello! I've been at Rollins for going on 11 yearsfirst with the Academic Resource Center, and now with TJ's, the Thomas. P. Johnson (T...J...) Student Resource Center. After Rollins centralized all academic assistance on campus seven years ago, I started the peer tutoring program to complement those services provided by the longstanding Writing Center. My years teaching English for academic purposes in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs in universities here and abroad have given me insight into the many good habits that lead to success in higher education. Attending Writing Center and now tutoring conferences for the past ten years has also helped me understand how peers can provide the missing link for many students. How can we help you?

George Chrystal
Professor George Chrystal
Mathematician and academic. Born in Old Meldrum and educated at the Grammar School and University in Aberdeen, excelling in both institutions. He studied under James Clerk Maxwell (1831-79) at Cambridge. Appointed to the Regius Chair of Mathematics at St. Andrews, he became a regular contributor to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. In 1879, he accepted the Chair in Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. Perhaps Chrystal's greatest contribution was in educational reform. He was an enthusiastic contributor to the framing of The Universities (Scotland) Act, 1889 which liberalised University constitutions and curricula. Chrystal was instrumental in the introduction in 1888 of a Leaving Certificate Examination common to all schools. He died in Edinburgh. If you have found this information useful please consider
