Claude Chevalley was the only son of Abel and Marguerite Chevalley who were the authors of the Oxford Concise French Dictionary. He studied under Emile Picard After graduating Chevalley continued his studies in Germany, studying under Artin at Hamburg during session 1931-32. He then went to the University of Marburg where he studied under Hasse who had been appointed to fill Hensel 's chair there in 1930. He was awarded his doctorate in 1937. In 1938 Chevalley went to the United States to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton where he also served on the Faculty of the University of Princeton. From July 1949 until June 1957 he served as professor of mathematics at Columbia University, afterwards returning to the University of Paris. algebraic geometry . He did pioneering work in the theory of local rings in 1943, developing ideas due to Krull Chevalley's theorem was important in applications made in 1954 to quasi-algebraically closed fields and applications made the following year to algebraic groups . Chevalley groups play a central role in the classification of finite simple groups . His name is also attached to Chevalley decompositions and to a Chevalley type of semi-simple algebraic group. Many of his texts have become classics. He wrote

The cohomology of the cotangent bundle of Heisenberg groups
Advances in Mathematics Volume 181, Issue 2 , 30 January 2004, Pages 276-307
Abstract : Given a parabolic subalgebra g1×n of a semisimple Lie algebra, Kostant (Ann. Math. 1963) and Griffiths (Acta Math. 1963) independently computed the g1 invariants in the cohomology group of n with exterior adjoint coefficients. By a theorem of Bott (Ann. Math. 1957), this is the cohomology of the associated compact homogeneous space with coefficients in the sheaf of local holomorphic forms. In this paper we determine explicitly the full module structure, over the symplectic group, of the cohomology group of the Heisenberg Lie algebra with exterior adjoint coefficients. This is the cohomology of the cotangent bundle of the Heisenberg group.

Reviews Table of Contents This famous book was the first treatise on Lie groups in which a modern point of view was adopted systematically, namely, that a continuous group can be regarded as a global object. To develop this idea to its fullest extent, Chevalley incorporated a broad range of topics, such as the covering spaces of topological spaces, analytic manifolds, integration of complete systems of differential equations on a manifold, and the calculus of exterior differential forms. The book opens with a short description of the classical groups: unitary groups, orthogonal groups, symplectic groups, etc. These special groups are then used to illustrate the general properties of Lie groups, which are considered later. The general notion of a Lie group is defined and correlated with the algebraic notion of a Lie algebra; the subgroups, factor groups, and homomorphisms of Lie groups are studied by making use of the Lie algebra. The last chapter is concerned with the theory of compact groups, culminating in Peter-Weyl's theorem on the existence of representations. Given a compact group, it is shown how one can construct algebraically the corresponding Lie group with complex parameters which appears in the form of a certain algebraic variety (associated algebraic group). This construction is intimately related to the proof of the generalization given by Tannaka of Pontrjagin's duality theorem for Abelian groups.

Claude Chevalley 11 February 28 June ) was a French mathematician with an austere style based on abstract algebra . He was born in Johannesburg , and died in Paris . He was a founder member of the Bourbaki group. After graduating from the École Normale Supérieur, he studied under Emil Artin in Hamburg from 1931, a time which may have formed his mathematical taste, and then under Helmut Hasse. One of his achievements was a step in the technical development of class field theory , removing a use of L-functions and replacing it by an algebraic method. At that time use of group cohomology was implicit, cloaked by the language of central simple algebras. In the introduction to his book Basic Number Theory , Chevalley's friend André Weil explains that the book's adoption of that road goes back to an old, unpublished manuscript of Chevalley. Chevalley also wrote a three-volume treatment of Lie groups around 1950. A few years later he published an investigation into what are now called Chevalley groups , and for which he is most remembered. An accurate discussion of conditions of integrality in the Lie algebras of semisimple groups enabled their theory to be abstracted from the real and complex fields. As a consequence, analogues over finite fields could be defined. This was an essential stage in the theory of the finite simple groups. After Chevalley's work the distinction between 'classical groups' falling into the
