Claude Chevalley
Chevalley was born to paint. When "Chevalley" stands at his "Chevalet" it is difficult to know where the artist ends and his easel begins. One understands without difficulty that his finished paintings reflect a natural ability to recreate light and form in a style sometimes reminiscent of the masters he studied: Bonnard, Balthus and Chardin.
After completing his studies at the École Superieure des Beaux Arts de Paris, the artist pursued a mixed career in advertising, publication and lithography, during which time he received several prestigious awards for his work. In the 1970's he served as an art director for the publishing house, Baudelaire, and later became one of the top illustrators at another press company, Gallimard. By 1995, Chevalley's illustrious career was noticed by Prince Rainier, who invited Chevalley to become the "Official Artist" of Monaco.

Claude Chevalley was the only son of Abel and Marguerite Chevalley who were the authors of the Oxford Concise French Dictionary. He studied under Emile Picard After graduating Chevalley continued his studies in Germany, studying under Artin at Hamburg during session 1931-32. He then went to the University of Marburg where he studied under Hasse who had been appointed to fill Hensel 's chair there in 1930. He was awarded his doctorate in 1937. In 1938 Chevalley went to the United States to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton where he also served on the Faculty of the University of Princeton. From July 1949 until June 1957 he served as professor of mathematics at Columbia University, afterwards returning to the University of Paris. algebraic geometry . He did pioneering work in the theory of local rings in 1943, developing ideas due to Krull Chevalley's theorem was important in applications made in 1954 to quasi-algebraically closed fields and applications made the following year to algebraic groups . Chevalley groups play a central role in the classification of finite simple groups . His name is also attached to Chevalley decompositions and to a Chevalley type of semi-simple algebraic group. Many of his texts have become classics. He wrote

Claude Chevalley
Claude Chevalley 11 February 28 June ) was a French mathematician with an austere style based on abstract algebra . He was born in Johannesburg , and died in Paris . He was a founder member of the Bourbaki group. After graduating from the École Normale Supérieur, he studied under Emil Artin in Hamburg from 1931, a time which may have formed his mathematical taste, and then under Helmut Hasse. One of his achievements was a step in the technical development of class field theory , removing a use of L-functions and replacing it by an algebraic method. At that time use of group cohomology was implicit, cloaked by the language of central simple algebras. In the introduction to his book Basic Number Theory , Chevalley's friend André Weil explains that the book's adoption of that road goes back to an old, unpublished manuscript of Chevalley. Chevalley also wrote a three-volume treatment of Lie groups around 1950. A few years later he published an investigation into what are now called Chevalley groups , and for which he is most remembered. An accurate discussion of conditions of integrality in the Lie algebras of semisimple groups enabled their theory to be abstracted from the real and complex fields. As a consequence, analogues over finite fields could be defined. This was an essential stage in the theory of the finite simple groups. After Chevalley's work the distinction between 'classical groups' falling into the
