51: Geometry
Introduction
Geometry is studied from many perspectives! This large area includes classical Euclidean geometry and synthetic (non-Euclidean) geometries; analytic geometry; incidence geometries (including projective planes); metric properties (lengths and angles); and combinatorial geometries such as those arising in finite group theory. Many results in this area are basic in either the sense of simple, or useful, or both! There is separate page for constructibility questions (i.e. compass-and-straightedge constructions). There is a separate page for a triangulation problem (in the geographers' sense, not the topologists'). Included on that page is information about determining location by distances from fixed points.
History
A bibliography (and some related web sites) on the history of geometry is available from David Joyce. See the article on NonEuclidean geometry at St Andrews.
Applications and related fields
As appealing as questions on simple geometry are, they are often mathematically speaking rather trivial, so we have little material here. Some of the meatier issues in "geometry" are easily classified somewhere else. Thus you'll have to look elsewhere for topics on

Professor Shiing Shen Chern SS Chern was born in 1911, in Jia Xin, China. At the age of fifteen, he started undergraduate studies at Nankai University. While initially interested in Physics but finding himself clumsy with experimental work, he settled on Mathematics as a major eventually. He entered Tsinghua University in 1930 and began graduate studies. At Tsinghua, he met a number of Chinese mathematicians who had obtained PhDs from abroad and eventually decided to further his horizons in Hamburg, Germany. Upon his return to China, Chern became a professor of Mathematics at Tsinghua. In 1949 he moved to the University of Chicago and in 1960, to University of California, Berkeley. After his retirement in 1979, he continued to be active and helped establish the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. Having devoted a lifetime to the teaching and research of Mathematics, in particular, Geometry, Chern considers the differential geometry of fiber spaces ones of his most important works. In recent years, he has also become interested in Finsler geometry.

HKUST Establishes S S Chern Lecture to Enhance Knowledge
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has established the Shiing-Shen Chern Lecture, with Professor Chen-Ning Yang, 1957 Nobel Laureate in Physics, to deliver the inaugural lecture on Saturday, 9 November 2002.
Prof Shiing-Shen Chern Prof Chern, currently visiting HKUST, has been hailed as one of the greatest geometers of the 20th century. In 1944, he stunned the mathematical world with the development of the Chern characteristic classes in fibre spaces, which have made an important impact on all areas of mathematics.
His success has inspired many students to follow his example, including Nobel Laureate Prof Chen-Ning Yang, and Prof Shing-Tung Yau, the first Chinese to receive the prestigious Fields Medal in 1982.
"We hope to attract renowned scientists from around the world to visit HKUST every year and give lectures on the latest developments at the frontiers of research," says Prof Shiu Yuen Cheng, Associate Dean of Science and Head of the Department of Mathematics. Prof Cheng studied under Prof Chern when he was a PhD student at the University of California, Berkeley.
The 91-year-old Chern was born in Jia Xing, Zhejiang, China in 1911. He graduated from Nankai University, Tianjin, in 1930, and received a master's degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 1934. In 1935, he made the unusual choice to study in Germany, under Wilhelm Blaschke at Hamburg University, and completed his PhD dissertation in less than a year. He went to Princeton University, US, from 1943 to 1945, where he developed the famous Chern characteristic classes, opening up a new era for differential geometry.

Workshop on Finsler Geometry and its Applications
11-15 August, 2003, Debrecen, Hungary
    First Announcement
We inform you that during the period 11-15th of August, 2003, a Workshop on Finsler Geometry and its Applications will be held in Debrecen, Hungary, organized by the Department of Geometry, University of Debrecen, Debrecen, Hungary, in cooperation with the Debrecen Branch of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The arrival day is 10 of August, Sunday, and the departure day is 16 of August, Saturday. The scientific program (11-15th of August) is devoted to lectures given by the participants on various fields of Finsler geometry, their generalizations, and applications in physics, biology, control theory, finance, psychometry, etc. This event is intended to continue the series of workshops on Finsler geometry (Seattle 1995; Edmonton 1998, Iasi 2001, Berkeley 2002) and the Finsler Symposiums held yearly in Japan. On behalf of the organizers we have the pleasure to invite you to this workshop. We would be glad if you contributed to the success of the workshop by a lecture, or simply by taking part in the discussions. The Advisory Board consists of: Antonelli, Peter (Edmonton, Canada)
