82. LETTER TO SYDNEY UNIVERSITY RE SIMON CHAPMAN 22.8.97
LETTER TO sydney UNIVERSITY RE SIMON chapman 22.8.97. Are the extremely distortedviews of Dr/Professor chapman truely representative of sydney University?
http://www.ssaa.org.au/Syduni.html
LETTER TO SYDNEY UNIVERSITY RE: SIMON CHAPMAN 22.8.97 BY CONCERNED SSAA MEMBER Dear Sir, Last Friday morning 22 August 1997, I heard on Radio 2GB an interview between Clive Robertson and a Dr/Professor Chapman, who claimed to be from Sydney University. The fact that Dr Chapman presented extremely biased opinions, was ill informed and made many illogical and irrational statements has prompted me to contact you to ascertain whether in fact he is a real Dr/Professor, or simply a student masquerading as "The Learned Professor", as part of a University prank. Upon listening to this hotch potch of mixed up muddled thinking, I immediately telephoned Radio 2GB to alert them to the fact that perhaps they were being "conned" and subsequently faxed them some suggested questions, which Clive Robertson could have posed to the "Dr/Professor". A copy of this fax is attached for your reference. Although I do not have a transcript of this interview, I seem to recall that Dr/Professor Chapman included such statements as "a shooter was recently arrested for chopping off someone's head, and there is a shooter in Queensland who believes we are still ruled by the Magna Carta - so shooters are all a crazy lot aren't they". I am sure you will agree that such statements being gross generalisation (apart from being toally irrational), also ignore the thousands of shooters throughout Australia who are members of volunteer groups, such as state emergency services and the bush fire brigades. He neglected to point out that many of the volunteers in the Thredbo rescue team were "shooters" and that many of the bush fire fighters who saved Sydney a couple of years ago are also "shooters" - Does he simply choose to ignore facts that do not support his argument?

Crikey Contributor Australia has one of the slackest voting systems in the Western world when it comes to ensuring there is no rorting yet no-one bothers to crack down on it. Crikey's vote-rigging expert Rory Rorter attended a fascinating conference recently which shed new light on a disturbing and little-discussed problem. 04 March 2001
The Society, established in 1997, is named after the Hon. Henry Samuel Chapman (1803-1881), defence barrister for the Eureka rebels and author of our original world-first secret ballot law. Its aims are, in brief, to promote the principles of fair elections in Australia, and identify the opportunity for, and the occurrence of, electoral fraud, malpractice and maladministration, and to promote legislative and administrative solutions to these problems. (Website: www.hschapman.org.au) The quality of the speakers at the Forum was very good. They were from a mixture of Labor and Coalition backgrounds, as were presumably the audience of about 25. We heard from the hugely impressive President, Sydney historian Dr Amy McGrath OAM, MA, PhD, author of several books including "The Forging of Votes" which describes, among other things, the battles fought by her husband and others in the Federated Ironworkers' Association in Sydney against Communist control of their Union. First speaker and Chairman of the Forum was Ken Chapman, past Mayor and Councillor of Fairfield Council in Sydney. He gave a talk on corrupt practices in the ALP as presented to the recent CJC Inquiry in Queensland, and was there a difference between Queensland and the rest of Australia? (Answer: NO.) He described practices he experienced when he first joined the ALP in 1962, when he was asked to vote in the names of dead people. (He refused - clap from audience.) He then gave a background brief on ethnic branch stacking in Fowler, an electorate in Sydney's western suburbs and the start of it in the State seat of Cabramatta where Member John Newman was assassinated in September 1994. Mr Chapman worked for John Newman. He resigned from the ALP in 1995.

Universities prepare for national fee hike rally
By Scott Neville
SYDNEY For student union leader Tim Chapman, students screaming protest chants is a regular part of his job. But as he stood among hundreds of student protesters last week at the University of Western Sydney, Chapman's fight against fee increases became personal. As students raged about 25-percent increases to HECS student fees next year, the New South Wales chapter president of the National Union of Students noticed many of the usual protesters were absent. When he asked their whereabouts, Chapman was told many of them - including a good friend - had quit school. "Melanie just dropped out of uni - she just couldn't afford it anymore," Chapman said. "People are just leaving university, saying they can't afford it anymore." University of Western Sydney is one of many schools around the country that has staged rallies to protest the growing financial burden on students. The rallies have been previews to the big National Day of Action, scheduled for March 31. According to National Union of Student President Jodie Jansen, students nation-wide are preparing to shout their concerns during the day of protest. As tension mounts between universities' struggle for adequate federal funding and government's view that students should contribute more to their educations, Jansen has been getting students organized. From handing out flyers in the cafeteria to hosting educational forums on student protest rights, local student associations are laying their plans.

Biographical memoirs
Herbert Sydney Green 1920-1999
By Angas Hurst This memoir was originally published in Historical Records of Australian Science , vol.13, no.3, 2001. Numbers in brackets refer to the references at the end of the text.
Numbers in square brackets refer to the bibliography also at the end of the text. Introduction Bert Green's influence on the development of theoretical science in Australia during the nearly fifty years he lived here cannot be overestimated. From the time he arrived in Adelaide in July 1951 until his death on 16 February 1999 he produced articles and books covering topics as diverse as particle physics, environmental science and neurophysiology. In each of the areas in which he worked, his contributions were always marked by erudition and originality. It is not surprising, therefore, that everyone who came in contact with him, from undergraduate students to international colleagues, wrote in warm and admiring tones about their contact with him. So, although his official appointment was to the inaugural chair of Mathematical Physics in the University of Adelaide, physics was only one of the fields in which he employed his superb mathematical talent. As an example of some of the outer reaches of his interests, he once used some statistical analyses, prepared by the Dutch composer Henk Badings, of the compositions of some of the great composers to produce by computer (then the very rudimentary IBM1620) lines in the style of Beethoven and Mozart. The then Elder Professor of Music, John Bishop, was highly intrigued.

Pocket rockets
The low-cost space race is on as private companies see big money in launching satellites and tourists into orbit. JOHN HUXLEY talked to some of the people turning dreams into machines. EVEN as a schoolboy, growing up in the far-off Sydney of the 1940s, Phil Chapman had a simple if ambitious career plan: to go from Parramatta High to sky-high by the fastest possible route. He studied the stars. He devoured the fantasies of the science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke and dreamt of turning them into fact. He wrote to the Prime Minister, Robert Menzies, warning him that the proposed Woomera rocket site in South Australia was pointed in the wrong direction for satellite launches. "Oh, yes, Menzies wrote back," Chapman recalls. "He thanked me for my interest, but reassured me - wrongly, as it happened, of course - that as satellites would not be required in the future, I was not to worry." Undeterred, Chapman had decided by age 14 that he wanted to be an astronaut. Since then, he has come tantalisingly close. After a distinguished academic career in Australia and the United States, he joined NASA as a scientist-astronaut. From Houston, he watched man walk on the moon. He was mission scientist for Apollo 14. He was shortlisted to go into space on Skylab II. ...

Second ANITA Workshop
Macquarie University, 2-3 October 2003
Nature of the Meeting
The Australian National Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics ( ANITA ) is holding the Second ANITA Workshop on Thursday October 2nd and Friday October 3rd at Macquarie University. The purpose of the workshop is to raise awareness of the theoretical astrophysics research being undertaken within Australia. The workshop also provides an opportunity for observers to lobby for theoretical support for their research programmes, or to intrigue theorists with unexplained phenomena! It is anticipated that the programme will consist of 20+5 minute talks presenting theoretical results that bear on the interpretation of observations or that suggest observational tests of ideas. Presentations by astronomers who would like to generate theoretical interest in their observational work are also welcome. Registration for the ANITA workshop is free and open to all (i.e. not just ANITA members). An AAOmega Science Workshop will be held on Wednesday October 1st at Macquarie, immediately prior to the ANITA workshop, so why not attend both?
