B.2 Plenary Lectures
At the recommendation of the Program Committee, appointed by the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the Organizing Committee has invited 20 mathematicians to give one-hour Plenary Lectures. The names of the speakers, together with their affiliations and fields of research, are listed below. The Plenary Lectures will inform participants of major developments, problems, and trends in mathematics.
The IMU General Assembly, the Program Committee, and the Organizing Committee have emphasized that these lectures should be comprehensible to a wide spectrum of mathematicians. All plenary speakers have agreed to
prepare addresses for a general mathematical audience.

Women in Mathematics
An Internet WebQuest on Women in Mathematics created by Julie Santoni, Connie Codner, and Pam Santino
Sandwich Public Schools Introduction The Task HyperText Dictionary
Introduction
Have you ever heard of Hypatia or Agnesi. Odds are you haven't. Hypatia was stoned to death for her beliefs and when Agnesi had her book translated her theory was known as 'the witch of Agnesi'. These two women along with many more have made substantial contributions to the area of mathematics.
The Quest
The Association for Women in Mathematics has asked that a team be put together to enlighten the world to these important mathematicians. Individually you will become an expert on 1 mathematician. You will use your information to create a short biography. As a team you will use your individual research to create a timeline to show that women have been engaged in math for thousands of years. Then as a class you will create an all inclusive timeline. Using infromation you have gathered you will also use a world map to pinpoint the place of birth of your mathematician.
The Process and Resources
In this WebQuest you will be working together with a group of students in class. Each group will answer the Task or Quest(ion). As a member of the group you will explore Webpages from people all over the world who care about Women in Mathematics. Because these are real Webpages we're tapping into, not things made just for schools, the reading level might challenge you. Feel free to use the online Webster dictionary or one in your classroom.

Biography Assignment - KSU 1101/03 - Fall 2003 Student Presentations Due: On or before October 27, 2003 Each student is required to complete a biographical summary of at least one outstanding woman in science or technology. Students should submit a written report of 4-6 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font. Biographies should clearly state the contribution to science and technology made by the outstanding woman. Students should use and cite at least three references from acceptable sources. Presentations have been scheduled as shown here . Oral presentations should be between 10 and 15 minutes in length. Students are encouraged to prepare a Power Point slide show for this presentation. Below is a list of potential subjects for the biography. Check with Dr. Myers about selecting someone not on this list: Biology/Chemistry:
  • Rachel Carson Lynn Margulis Rosalind Franklin Katherine Blodgett Elizabeth Lee Hazen and Rachel Brown Gertrude B. Elion Stephanie Louise Kwolek Barbara Askins Ann Tsukamoto

AN OPEN LETTER TO UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF EDUCATION RICHARD RILEY
Dear Secretary Riley: Click here for related links. In early October of 1999, the United States Department of Education endorsed ten K-12 mathematics programs by describing them as " exemplary " or " promising ." There are five programs in each category. The " exemplary " programs announced by the Department of Education are:
  • Cognitive Tutor Algebra College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM) Connected Mathematics Program (CMP) Core-Plus Mathematics Project Interactive Mathematics Program (IMP)
The " promising " programs are:
  • Everyday Mathematics MathLand Middle-school Mathematics through Applications Project (MMAP) Number Power The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP)
These mathematics programs are listed and described on the US DOE web site The Expert Panel that made the final decisions did not include active research mathematicians. Expert Panel members originally included former NSF Assistant Director, Luther Williams, and former President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Jack Price. Link to: list of current Expert Panel members It is not likely that the mainstream views of practicing mathematicians and scientists were shared by those who designed the criteria for selection of "

THE WOMEN OF MATHEMATICS
by
Dorothy Ripplinger
Most of you know about the men in mathematics : Nervous Newton, who lacked the confidence to have his work published; Elemental Euclid, the first mathematician who wrote one of the most infuential books in the world; Probable Pascal, who created the groundwork for probability; Never Dull Descartes, who gave us the Cartesian coordinate system that bears his name. And Vowels for Viete, who established the variable notation that we use in Algebra. (You are going to learn to love this man's work.) This year you are going to learn about a few more mathematicians you may never have heard of, the women of mathematics. Believe it or not, this is not a short list, although I have, in my infinite kindness, limited the women you are going to study. By the end of the year you will find out that, yes, there are women in math, and yes, women have been doing mathematics for a long time.
RESOURCES
The resources you need will be included with each of the sections you will be studying.
